Has anyone attempted a TiVo RAM upgrade before? I've trawled through DDB and Google but have yet to come up with any successful or failed attempts.

Assuming that one could replace the OEM memory with compatible higher density modules, would the kernel automagically recognize the extra memory or would we have to do some patching? Would it even benefit performance?

I'm more than happy to use myself as a guinea pig but I figured I'd test the waters before I dove in head first. ;)

(Yes, you will need to patch the kernel.)

Years ago I upgraded the RAM in an S1. That was really my first involved SMD soldering project. Of course, the board was laid out for it already and the BIOS could be set to use it so this was a completely different discussion than an S2.

I assume you are thinking about your TX20, which should be similar to alldeadhomiz's post.

A cursory look at my S3 MB didn't tell me much. I could see that of the six or so ram chips, not all of them tie into the broadcom chip, but there must be dedicated memory. Of that which ties in, I saw they they do directly connect, so an upgrade would be a matter of referencing the specs on the chip - what memory it can function with and determining the options available. Then building a new kernel...

Well, I've been using my RS-TX20 as a "development" platform and my S3 as my "production" platform. Once I successfully upgrade my Toshiba, I'll move on to my Series3. I'll post my progress as I go along, starting today. ;)

I found some decently priced PC2700 RAM at Best Buy today that uses the same brand Nanya chips my Toshiba currently uses. I'm going to pick up a stick or two and see what my results are in transplanting the chips.
