Hello all,

I have lurked the forums for a while, but could use some more personalized help in finding if this solution is possible. I have about 10 Tivo Series 1 hard drives that I want to backup/extract the shows from as quickly and easily as possible.

I have a TurboNet card, and can see that I can probably do this manually, drive by drive, and I have to manually setup telnet & ftp on the drives, before I can extract any video, etc.

I will send $100 via PayPal to whomever can tell me how to do the following:
Exact shows from my Series 1 drives by having the drives connected direct a PC.

I really do not want to have to configure each and every drive for telnet & ftp, install the files on the drive, and then do the extraction. Plus, I need to manually backup each drive b4 doing this, so that takes a good 18hours.

If this is NOT possible, I will pay $50 via PayPal to anyone who can offer me another easy/quick way/script to extract the shows from the drives.

If there is no better/more easy way to extract the shows than doing it manually, then I would be happy to pay someone for some 1-on-1 assistance if needed while doing all of this manually, until I learn how to do it, so I can do it on all of the drives with the least amount of work.

SUMMARY: I am looking for a quick/easy way to extract shows from series I hard drives, to backup/play on a PC.

I am posting this in hopes of a more creative/experienced users and help me with a better solution that will save me many hours of work - hence the comparatively small reward for the help.

sincerely,
Midnight

Since you have a Series 1, encryption isn't an issue. Have you read this thread (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23192)?

Since you have a Series 1, encryption isn't an issue. ..Doesn't that depend on whether it is a SA or DTivo? I've never owned a Series1, but I got that impression here (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showpost.php?p=135040&postcount=2). It's an old post, so it might be dated information.

Scrambling is definitely an issue with the S1 DTivos, but since the OP neglected to provide enough pertinent info about his Tivo we're left guessing what he has.

The Steve Jenkins networking tutorial will show you how to get the networking functions enabled on either S1 model. If you have a S1 DTivo you'll have to look for info on disabling encryption. (Hint: Check out the extraction forum for Alphawolf's thread on the topic). Install your extraction utility of choice and you're all set. Just be aware that you can't unscramble shows after they've been recorded on a S1 DTivo. You MUST disable encryption prior to recording a show or you won't be able to extract and process the file.

I'd be rather astonished if it didn't. It certainly worked for me back when I had a S1 DTiVo.

I've never used that program so I was unaware that you could unscramble the recordings after the fact. I know you can do it on a S2 Tivo but didn't know about the S1 version. Sorry about any misinformation. I haven't worked with S1 Tivos in several years so my recollection of what works and what doesn't is a bit sketchy.

unscramble.o is not working for me. I have a DSR6000 running 3.5 and LBA48. I am still searching for an updated version of unscramble but no luck so far...

You do know that you have to start playing the selected program (for 10 seconds or so) after loading unscramble.o?

Thanks for the reminder Steve. Unfortunately I have tried playing for a full minute and still get an error "Failed to get the first 10 initial chunks...", so it's still encrypted. I did not start extracting until 2 weeks ago after I followed AlphaWolf's instructions (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=31213) and updated to the corrected seek=5108848 for my unit. Shows recorded after that time extract perfectly. From what I can tell unscramble.o has been around since 2003, so I might have made a mistake updating to 3.5 last year based on this (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=49538) post. I have not found an unscramble.o that works with 3.5 or another way to extract my encrypted shows.

Did you ALSO disable encryption on new recordings?

I will say that my last foray into unscramble.o was back in the 2.5 days, so perhaps things have changed.

Apparently unscramble.o conflicts with tyserver, which is how I was extracting the newly recorded unencrypted shows using TyTool10r4. I found this (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showpost.php?p=254719&postcount=18) post and was able to get 3.5 and unscramble.o working together. I had to run Mfs_ftp, run unscramble.o, prime the show for 10 seconds (but do not leave it paused), and use Smart FTP to copy the tmf files directly. So it's still possible to extract from 3.5 with unscramble.o :)

midnightio - As far as I can tell, you will need to have the hard drive installed into the original TiVo. Take note of #3 from the scramble_utils read me:
Limitations: currently 3 things must match to play or decrypt a scrambled recording
1) CommercialSkipOffset keys (stored in ty+ or tmf archives)
2) tivo hard drive DiskConfigurationKey
3) tivo motherboard crypto chip
if the DiskConfigurationKey has changed for any reason (re-imaged the drive sw update - clear & delete) the correct DiskConfigurationKey (DC_key.xml) must be restored
