Two tuners in one Tivo is not enough. Believe it?

I bought a second Tivo and want it in the same room on the same TV as my other one. (HR10-250 and now a R10) But as you know they react to the same remote so this isn't working for me very well. Is there a mod or a solution that I can apply so I can have these two Tivos on the same TV without having them both react to the same remote?

Thanks

Lot's of people here have more than one dual-tuner Tivo. There's a procedure for setting up your Tivo and remote for multiple IR addresses in the users manual but here it is anyway:

1. Cover up the IR window on the Tivo you're not programming or place it in standby.

2. Access the System Information screen and scroll down until you see the IR code setting. It should indicate (0) - not set. I prefer to use the front panel buttons to access the menu to ensure that I don't accidentally set up both Tivos at the same time when using the remote.

3. Press the Tivo/DirectTV and Pause buttons simultaneously until the red LED on the tip of the remote comes on and stays on. I like to do this away from the Tivo to ensure it doesn't receive any stray IR commands.

4. Aim the remote at the Tivo and press any button from 1 to 9.

5. Press the right cursor arrow to set the code. Press the left cursor arrow to resume normal operation. The IR code number changes to the number you just selected. The Tivo will now respond only to the remote programmed with the same IR codeset as well as the default setting of 0.

6. Repeat the above process for all Tivos that will be in the same room. Each Tivo MUST have a code assigned to it. The default setting of "0" will override any settings you have assigned and works as the master IR code so you don't want to leave any Tivo at the default setting.

FYI - in the future, please post your questions in the appropriate forum. This is a developer's forum and not a place to post newbie questions. When in doubt, post in the newbie section.

Sorry, and thanks. I didn't realize it was this easy. This "The Tivo will now respond only to the remote programmed with the same IR codeset as well as the default setting of 0." to me implies the Tivo remotes can't be used, or can they be changed to use a different code set?

You can definitely use the Tivo remote since that's what you use to set up the different codesets. You just need to use a separate remote for each Tivo. You could use a single remote but you'd have to change the codeset on the remote everytime you wanted to switch between Tivos. The remote and Tivo become a matched set once they've been programmed. The default codeset of "0" will work regardless of what the Tivo has been programmed for. For example, if you programmed one Tivo with the codeset "1" and did not program the 2nd Tivo and remote, the remote set for "1" would only work with the Tivo that was programmed with the same codeset. However, the remote that was never programmed (i.e., still set to the default "0" codeset) would operate both Tivos, regardless of which codeset the Tivo was programmed for.

There is a version of the TIVO remote with a DVR1/DVR2 switch that can be set up to work either of two TIVOs. You can get one from Weaknees for $29.

I'd check ebay before buying directly from Weaknees. He tends to mark things up considerably.

I must be doing something wrong because I can't get the 'codeset' to stick. I've got two tivo remotes and two tivo's. I blocked the ir sensor of one and verified it wasn't listening. I followed the steps above and did see the codeset change to '2' on the other tivo. I pressed the left arrow to resume normal operation. I repeated this process with the second remote and other tivo only using codeset '1'. I should be good, right? When I use one of the remotes both tivo's react and both are now set to the codeset of that remote.

Step 5 say's the 'right cursor arrow'. That is on the wheel and not the double arrow, right? I guess I'll try some more things but I think I doing it right.

Just as I expected it was something I was doing wrong.
What I didn't realize was Tivo would change the codeset to any tivo remote codeset when you go into the information screen, not just by pressing the right arrow. What I did was after setting the codeset with one remote I would use the second remote (with a different codeset) to see that is didn't respond. But I was doing this while in the information screen so it changed the codeset and responded.

All is well and thanks for your help.
