I recently installed the networked option drive into my hr10-250. Everything looks good and I can use tivoweb with no worries. But, after following the step by step here: http://www.dvrplayground.com/article/12503/Beginner-s-Guide-to-Extraction-with-a-DirectTiVo--HD-or-non-HD-/
then starting the tytools app and entering the IP for the unit (the same IP that works for tivoweb) tytools doesn't connect. This is of course operator error, I just have no idea what I did wrong.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. And I apologize in advance if this issue has already been covered. I did search through a lot of posts and wasn't able to find a solution to my problem.
Thanks - Scott

Check the following:
Options->Preferences:
Server: "/ptvupgrade/bin/tserver"
Start the Server with:
Server->Start tserver
Now the bad news. TyTool doesn't work well with HR10-250. You'll be able to use extract .ty files, but none of the HD stuff will work. Be prepared to take a look at TySuiteJ or TyToMpg.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I'll give that a try.
Regarding the other ty apps you mention, are there any install guides posted for the hr10-250? Maybe I should just do what needs to be done.

As far as I know, there's no guides other than the readme's that come with the tools. Kind of depends on what you want to do. If you want DVDs TyTool is the best of it works (It worked about 50% of the time for me). If you just want playable mpeg, TyTool and TyToMpg work, or TySuiteJ.
Personally, I think TySuiteJ is the best thing since sliced bread (ok, I'm a little biased). It does require more setup than the other tools.

I bet you would have never guessed I'd get stuck again. So I'm able to 'get' some files to test/play with. But I keep getting the same problem upon processing with tytool:
Mux'ing (with cuts): C:\Documents and Settings\Scott\Desktop\movies\Go, Diego, Go!-Macky the Macaroni Penguin.ty
Sorry... Failed to get the first 10 initial chunks...
Have to have at least that many to start the analysis phase...
DiffTime = 0.000000 (0) == 0.000000 Minutes
total = 1310720 (1 MB)
Done with 'C:\Documents and Settings\Scott\Desktop\movies\Go, Diego, Go!-Macky the Macaroni Penguin.ty'...
I tried using tysuitej as well, and it doesn't seem to process either. These are all about 30 minute shows I decided to play with, to learn the process, none in HD. When I tried tysuite it didn't output the TS files (odd). I'm guessing that, yet once again, I missed something that's more than obvious. Thanks in advance.

I'm guessing you didn't turn off encryption or tried to extract a file that was encrypted prior to disabling it. Run ciphercheck on the Tivo. If you see any "Yes"es, you still have some encrypted titles.

I think I found the issue. I followed the instructions to turn off, but believe this was for an older version. I have hr10-250 v6.3d, so I'm searching for the correct value for "bs=1 seek=?". If there's a quick link to this for the 6.3d (I spent a couple of hours searching) please let me know. Thanks.

I have not installed 6.3d, but I think it's the same as 6.3c. Check the Series 2 support forum.

The tivoapp patch locations are the same for both 6.3c and d.

Thanks to both that answered.
Ok, so after a lot of reading I did this:
* rootwrite
* cp /tvbin/tivoapp /tvbin/tivoapp.orig
* cd /tvbin
* mv tivoapp tivoapp.tmp
* cp tivoapp.tmp tivoapp
* chmod 755 tivoapp
* echo -ne "\x3C\x02\x00\x00" | dd conv=notrunc of=tivoapp bs=1 seek=1602412
* echo -ne "\x10\x40\x00\x2b" | dd conv=notrunc of=tivoapp bs=1 seek=6713220
* echo -ne "\x24\x10\x00\x01" | dd conv=notrunc of=tivoapp bs=1 seek=2804900
* echo -ne "\x34\x11\x00\x00" | dd conv=notrunc of=tivoapp bs=1 seek=903436
* echo -ne "\x24\x10\x00\x01" | dd conv=notrunc of=tivoapp bs=1 seek=1118524
* echo -ne "\x10\x00\x00\x14" | dd conv=notrunc of=tivoapp bs=1 seek=5724672
* rootread
* reboot
Then I looked for a show that had recorded after the reboot and did a 'get' with tytool. Then I ran the VOB-MUX app in tytool on that file and this is the output:
Mux'ing (with cuts): C:\Documents and Settings\Scott\Desktop\movies\Dora the Explorer-Big River.ty
Sorry... Failed to get the first 10 initial chunks...
Have to have at least that many to start the analysis phase...

So it seems I'm still doing something rather on the stupid side.

Here's a good question (or a least the gray goose says so). character after the echo string but prior to the dd, is that a \ (a backslash)? I just noticed that looks a little odd. Also, I entered this exactly as I saw it. In other words if there was a " character it went in, if something looked lower or upper case that's how it was entered. So thinking about it, some assumptions were made on my part.

It's the "pipe" character (above the enter key) not a backslash - you might be better off looking into the Superpatch (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showpost.php?p=281554&postcount=682)

Thanks! I needed that. And I think what you were getting to is that I may want to read a little about linux (or at least some of the characters involved here). I've been trying to learn as I go, this one got by me that's for sure. I'm pretty excited about getting some of these features working. Maybe I'll take a break and read some more on the subject first.

Well with a little more reading I was able to get everything working. I'm left with two questions.
1. Since I started with an upgrade kit from dvrupgrade.com, would the superpatch still be a good idea, or would it cause any problems?
2. I was able to get HMO working using tivo desktop software v2.4 (tried galleon, but it wouldn't connect). I can view photo that are on my laptop, or listen to music and whatnot. But there are a number of other features listed (weather, traffic, etc.) that don't seem to work. Is this normal on the hr10-250?
I'm happy with it the way it is, but if these are supposed to be working I'll try to figure it out. Thanks - scott

AFAIK, those features (along with TivoToGo) aren't supported on the HR10-250.
Here's my method for burning HD content from my HR10-250 (for SD content, tytool works great but as others have said it chokes on a lot of HD content - anyone heard from jdiner lately?).
1) Use tytool to extract the .ty file (DO NOT MUX)
2) use tytompg (http://dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=51740) to convert into an mpg. At this point it's playable on a PC
3) Use Video ReDo (commercial application - $50 I think http://www.videoredo.com/ ) to edit out commercials. Save Video as a Transport Stream (ts).
4) Use HDTV2DVD (http://software.badgerit.com/HDTV2DVD.html) to convert the TS to a DVD-compliant MPG
5) Use DVD Author Pro to create menus and such (can use any DVD authoring program at this point - perhaps even tytool).
6) burn

If you are will to play with things, you can try this. It cuts out 2 of the steps above. You'll need the latest TySuiteJ (2.5 RC2) and ffmpeg
1. Extract with TySuiteJ to DVD Video
2. Remove the commercials with VideoRedo
3. Add menus/author with Nero or whatever.
4. Burn (3&4 can be done in one step, but I didn't want to cheat).
Totally untested. :)

If you've got an HD-DVD player you can keep your recordings in HD and burn them as HD-DVDs using a standard DVD burner and media.
1. Extract using the utility or your choice
2. Convert ty to mpeg using tytompg
3. Edit using VideoReDo
4. Patch the mpeg files from 1280x1088 to 1280x1080 using HDPatch (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=705146) and the tutorial posted at the AVSForum
5. Author with Ulead DVD Movie Factory 5 or 6
6. Burn with DVDMF or Nero using X-Box compatibility mode
The process works with HD files recorded from a variety of sources, as long as they're unencrypted. You can also use HDPatch for those HD channels, such as Fox, that broadcast in 720p.

I want to say that this forum is great. With a little work on my part, and some VERY helpful advice from some members who have been here a while, I was able to get everything working. And I can't say how much I appreciate that!
Thanks

Thanks so much for this. I do have an hd-dvd player (I just couldn't resist), and I had no idea there was a way to record HD content for playback on it without an HD-DVD recorder. Thanks!

Anyone successfully done it with this Tivo version?

You could go to the 6.x Collected Info (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=51032) thread, or just use Superpatch (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?p=281554&highlight=superpatch#post281554)

Superpatch didn't work for 6.3... Looked at the TCL briefly and it didn't seem to have a regex for 6.3. (Not really a coder though.) No worries. The following for 6.3a works for 6.3d if it helps anyone. Thx for the help.

so where do I put the two files I downloaded?It's probably easiest to upload both files to your tivo - the original base release (1.2.tcl) and the diff (1.12.txt), and follow the commands in the linked post. Make sure you upload (FTP) in binary and that you have the right 'patch' program. diamondsw's post explains it all. You could also do this patching in cygwin or native windows if you have a gnu 'patch' program (http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/patch.htm).
