I have a DirecTV RCA DVR-80 with a 160 GB Harddrive. I have applied Instant Cake software to that drive.

All was working well until I decided to change and play around with a file that assigns the IP address to the Tivo.

Well you can guess, I must have did something wrong. Now I can't network or access my Tivo any longer.

I can't remember the file name, but I think it was 'rc.sysinit.author' and for the IP it had 'AUTO' set in it. I had changed 'AUTO' to '192.168.10.1'. Since then I can not FTP or Telnet to the tivo.

Can I connect my drive to my PC and boot with Ubuntu CD and alter the file safely back to 'AUTO' with losing or messing up any recording or season pass.

If someone here understands what I'm talking about any help would be appreciate.

I understand what you are saying - you like to make changes and sometimes it bites you. Welcome to the club.

Don't use the Ubuntu cd; it won't recognize TiVo partitions. I suggest the mfsLive CD (http://www.mfslive.com/).

Before any future experiments, read Captain Video's TiVo Hacking 101 (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37058), than make a serial cable. (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?p=232686&postcount=5)
