My S1 Dtivo just bit the dust...
(Ok, it's been about 2 weeks, and I've just been too busy to do anything about it.)

I'm 99% sure that it is a drive failure - (currently I have 2 internal 200GB drivers) but I'm wondering what folks think that my best bet is:

1.) Any chance that the shows can be saved?
(I have one or two things that I had hoped to extract, but never bothered with)

2.) Is it worth getting a new drive for this system - or should I look into something newer (i.e. S2 DTivo).

While perhaps the wrong forum - is there some other system that I should consider altogether?
My priorities are:
1.) MANY hours of storage
2.) Stable
3.) Occasional extraction...
(To be honest, this is so infrequent - I could probably even live with analog extraction)
4.) Cost

First step would be to run the drive manufacturer's diagnostics to verify it is indeed a drive failure. If it is, your chances for saving any shows are very slim.

I'd say i's a toss-up between staying with the Series 1 and buying a Series 2. If it was NOT a drive failure your only chance to recover the shows is with a Series 1 system. The Series 1 was designed for two drives, so there should be less problems with overheating. On the other hand, Series 2 has a faster UI, mrv, and HMO.

I picked up a S2 (SD-DVR40) on ebay for what seemed to be a good price to me.

It is active and working now. I'll have to read up on what is involved in hacking it.

First and foremost: what size/type of drive I can upgrade it to :-)
Secondly, what type of network adapter to get for it.

So far as the S1 tivo - I had two drives.
If I were to assume that the primary drive died (thus the inability to boot to the tivo OS), and knowing that the shows were scrambled when stored....
I was wondering if anything could be done with the second drive....

i.e. mounting it (and the shows) after building a new primary drive...
or perhaps mounting it in a linux box and moving the streams back to the tivo so that they could be watched.

Likely a royal pain.... but there are like 3 recordings that I would have liked to save if they still exist.
(Family members on the local news discussing charity groups.)

Again, get the drive manufacturer's diagnostics and verify there is an unrecoverable error. However, if EITHER of the drives is bad you have virtually no chance of recovering the recordings. They can be saved on either (or both) drives.
