A friend of mine has a Hughes SD-DVR40 that is giving him some trouble. One of the tuners appears to be failing, so he bought a used unit on Ebay. Unfortunately he did not check the Receiver ID with DirecTV before purchasing, and when he tried to have them swap it out they said the Ebay unit was blacklisted, something they do for accounts in collections, leased units, etc. No amount of pleading did any good, once the Receiver ID is blacklisted, DirecTV says that's that.
Back a few years ago there was a hack for the RCA 420 that made it possible to change the RID. Based on my searching, I don't think a similar hack exists for the Hughes, but I was wondering if anyone knows exactly WHICH chip on the Hughes actually holds the receiver ID. I work with SMD devices and have an SMD rework station, and I was thinking of swapping the chip on the Ebay unit with the one from my friend's unit with the bad tuner. If that could be done successfully the Ebay unit would because usable again. In fact, all I should have to do is take the card out of the bad unit and put it in the modded Ebay unit and it should work (probably need to move hard drive, too).
It's not a big deal, it's actually mostly curiosity on my part as to whether or not it could be done. Used SD-DVR40s sell relatively cheap on Ebay, my friend just needs to check the receiver ID with DirecTV BEFORE he buys one!
Assuming I won't be able to transplant the RID, can a blacklisted DirecTivo be used for anything useful other than parts?
Thanks!
