View Full Version : Strange reboot problem after drive replacement

I've recently swapped my original TiVo drive in my HR10-250 with two new Seagate 7200.10 500GB drives. I removed the old drive and performed an mfsbackup and then used that file to restore it to one of the drives. (I'm keeping the other out for now just to make sure the upgrade is cool, then I'll add it in if it is).

The problem is, everything is not cool. After I attach the new Seagate drive to the TiVo it gets a little past the "Almost there" screen then reboots and goes back to the powering up screen. Then this process loops. Sometimes I get a GSOD, sometimes it just goes back to the powering up screen.

At first I thought it was just a bad drive, so I tried the other and same thing. So then I ran diagnostics on the drives using the Seagate tools and they come back squeeky clean. No bad sectors, and write zeros across the whole drive results in the same. From what I can tell, the drives are cool, but TiVo hates them.

So then to rule out my backup, I tried a 3rd drive. This is a spare 250 GB drive I had, and it works fine after placing it in the TiVo. The TiVo acts and boots normal with the 250G drive.

Is there any known bug with mfsrestore I should know about? I'm baffled here. I don't know what else to do but return the drives and attempt another brand.

Forgot to add the -r 4 argument during the restore. Will try that and post back...

Yep, that was it. Adding the -r 4 argument fixed it.

That bug has been fixed in mfslive (http://www.mfslive.org).
