My old TCD2404a finally died on me and Tivo was nice enough to send out a replacement. I was very clear that I wanted the exact same model that I have but they sent me the newer light night model (2.5). I am pretty sure I need to solder in a prom if I want to use my hacked hard drive in it. Might just be worth it to sell it on e-bay and pick up an older model.
Any help appreciated.. my wife has some of her programs on the hard drive and really wants to see them.
Thanks

Yes, the 540 needs a PROM mod (or better yet, a socket) to "hack".
The internal hardware is different enough that the old TCD240's drive/software won't work on the 540.

Narf, I though you don't need a PROM if you just want to swap for a bigger HD???
Also, here is a site (Interactive TiVo Upgrade Instructions (http://tivo.upgrade-instructions.com/index.php)) to help with the HD swap.

Well there you go, if you just want a bigger HD. Get 540 and just use the instructions I posted from "Interactive TiVo Upgrade Instructions".

The original post says he had a TCD240 die on him, and they sent a replacement TCD540. He then goes on to say his drive was "hacked" and also that his Wife wants her shows off the dead TiVo. Unfortunately, you cannot just drop a TCD240 drive into a 540 machine -- the software is incompatible.
I'm well aware of Hinsdale's technique for swapping in a larger drive, but that was not what was in the original request. He's referring to Tivo model numbers, not drive capacities.
if you're industrious, and depending upon if you had the noCSO patches in place on your "hacked" TCD240, you might be able to use the "extraction" thread to dump the shows to a PC and then use Tivo-to-ComeBack (pyTivo, Tivo.NET, etc) to send the shows back to the newer TCD540 unit.

My bad, in 'interactive how to' there was an option "Are you moving this software from one TiVo to another", I've never used it, but thought it was for a case just like this. :(

That is what I thought. So... I found a older series 2 for $25 locally and popped my old hard drive in and it is working great.
Now I would really love to update the software in this. It has been 3 years since I hacked the drive to get telnet and ftp access. It has not updated since version 4.01 and I am very nervous about installing the latest and greatest version. After all these years I forget what is even in there!
I read up on the manual install and am going to have to give it a shot. Will let you all know how it turns out.
Thanks
