and have been looking around, and have yet to find any good information, forgive me, i'm assuming this is all over, everywhere, but. I am looking to use a series 2 tivo for broadcast tv recording, without a monthly service plan. is it possible? i'm already an xbox geek, and if it is doable, i'm interested in what filesystem it uses, how big a hdd you ca swap in, etc. but, first things first, can you record broadcast tv without a service plan?

thanks so much!

okay, mods, sorry, i just noticed, yeah, this is the wrong place, if you could move this to the newbie section, that'd be great. thanks!

Not on a Series 2. Some Series 1 systems shipped with an early software version that allowed use as a 'dumb recorder'. This is covered in the stickies in the newbie section.

does anyone make a dumb recorder/is is very hard to find a series 1 that either has the software, or you can roll back to the old software?

Thanks!

The boxes from Toshiba and Pioneer that included a DVD player or writer included this service. They are no longer made, but you can pick them up on ebay. Try searching ebay for (Toshiba,Pioneer) tivo.

You can also pick up a humax DVD player, for around $50 AR, and add lifetime to it, for around $300. For example, http://www.weaknees.com/dvd-tivo.php

Note that these can only receive analog broadcast TV, which is going away in 2009. You'll need a converter box after that.

The early ReplayTV models came with lifetime guide data and no monthly fees. I actually preferred them to the series 1 Tivos in ease of setup and use. You may be able to find them on ebay at a reasonable cost. Look for the 1000, 2000, or 3000 series ReplayTV or Panasonic Showstopper models.
