I'm terrible with VI style editors, and would like to get
GNU Nano installed on the DVR. its TIVO system info
says its 6.2 system.

I have a working GNU Nano installed on my other RCA DVR40,
that one is still using directv 3.1.1c system software tho.
the older one was 'manually' hacked by a friend in Austrailia.

Anyway, I can telnet to both dtivo's from windows.
Where do I get a binary tarball for GNU Nano for a Series 2 DTIVO
with DirectTivo system software 6.2?

Thanks :)

I found the tgz for it, unziped it, then untared it.
after exporting TERM and TERMINFO for bash I
could exectue the binary, but everytime I use it,
it tells me:

"[Sorry, Support for this function has been disabled]"

terminal action was..

nano test

I then got the following error message... (screen cap attached)
am I being told editing is not supported...
that seems odd for an editor?

Where did you find the version you installed? I remember getting this (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=38805) to work a while back but I'm not a big fan of telnet-based editors so I didn't use it for too long.

not really sure but I think the thread you pointed to.

If I just type the error message disappears and looks like it workls ok.

I'm puzzeled - I want to assign a hostname (so the prompt will show it to me)
in 3.1.1c I added "/bin/hostname name" to /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit.author and it worked.
with 6.2 (ptvNET) it doesn't look like rc.sysinit calls rc.sysinit.author?
where am I supposed to put initialization exports for bash (TERM, TERMINFO,PS1)
and the hostname command?

Ask DVRupgrades, the source of PTVnet!!! They sold you that piece of garbage and deserve the right to answer your questions. As a matter of fact, they have their own support forum.
