OK, well please bear with me. I got some info from my wife who talked to Direct Tv today.

The past day or so my tv would all of a sudden black out for a sec then come back on. Well today it went out completely. It stays black.

When my wife called Direct Tv, they had her blow the card off, and that didn't work, so they had her press the standby button. Evidentely, at this point it wouldn't come back on and they said it was permenently locked in standby mode.

Anyone know how I can get it to come out of standby mode? If I sign a new 2 yr contract I can get a new one for $20, but I don't really want to do that.

Not sure if it matters or not because I swapped to the original HDD, but it still did nothing. The usual one I hacked a couple yrs ago.
Can anyone help?
Oh...I did try to search for an answer.

No big deal, but this probably should have been in the 'Broken Tivo's' forum. From your description, it's not locked in Standby - it's not starting.

I gather you aren't getting ANYTHING on the TV when the DSR7000 is plugged in. Here's a few things to try:

Unplug it, check the capacitors in the power supply to see if any have bulging tops.

While you have it open, disconnect the hard drive from both the main board and the power supply. Try powering it up, if the main board is working you should get a 'Welcome, powering up message'.

Do you get any LEDs on the front panel?

Make up a serial cable (http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?p=234467#post234467) and see if you get any error messages.

Thanks Bill,
I'll go and check for bad capacitors, I'll also unplug the drive and try to power it up.
What I am getting right now is just a black screen. No powering up, and no LEDs at all.

When I opened it up, it was pretty dusty, so I cleaned it out.

I'll go try what you suggested and let you know what happened.

Rick

EDIT: just checked the capacitors, all look OK. I disconnected the HD, IDE cable and power, and plugged the Tivo back in and nothing. No powering up screen. No LEDs.

That could be either a bad main board or a bad power supply. Either use a voltmeter to measure the voltage out, or hook up the hard drive power only (not the IDE cable) and see if it spins up. Also, check the fuse near the AC power connector.

I unplugged the IDE cable and plugged in the power. The fan was spiining and the HDD made the initial spin noise. With the IDE cable plugged in, the HDD did not spin.

I looked for a fuse near the power connector, but all I saw was something wrapped in black. It was right in front of the AC connector. I tested resistance through it and it seemed to be closed.

I'll work on trying to test the voltage output. Hopefully it isn't the main board, just a power supply.

Are the parts for these replaceable? Can they be bought anywhere?

Thanks for all the help BTW.

You can get used directivos on ebay dirt cheap that you can gut for parts or just use as a full replacement. I've got a stack of Samsungs from Ebay with no power supplies, fans or face plates.

weaknees.com sells replacement power supplies for TiVos.

if it turns out that is bad. It's from a DSR7000 and was working when I pulled it out. PM me if you need it.

Thanks guys....I appreciate the help.

I'm going to test the power supply to see what the voltage output is, but I'm not sure which wires to test. There are the four wires that plug into the HDD, but which ones should I test, and what should the output be?

EDIT:
I tested the 4 wires in the HDD plug, those tested 5v (red/black), 11.9v (yel/black).
From another post I found, I am pretty sure that's what they are supposed to be.

I'm going to look for a way to test the output to the MB?

esayre...I'm sending you a PM..

Well I just checked the back of my unit, and it's a DSR708, not the DSR7000.

Do they have the same power supply?
