I have a 40 gig harddrive that I want loaded with the TiVo files... I have one machine running, and am having problems loading the new harddrive for my second one. Both machines are Phillips DSR6000's... Can I send this drive to someone to load, or is the process easy to do myself?

It sounds like you're just trying to restore an image to your 40GB drive. The process is quite simple and is outlined in the Hinsdale's How To which you can easily find with a google search. You'll need a Linux boot CD that will work with a series 1 Tivo. I believe there are links for downloading a CD image in the Hinsdale's document.

i have a philips dsr 6000 that i have run a western digital drive in it. It freezes up and does all kinds of flakey stuff. This morning, it rebooted (and does so often), and is stuck on 70% it seems no amount of reboots make a difference.
I figured it was going to croak so i just bought a new maxtor 500gig drive, putting on the image of extreme 2.5 i am able to install this software, but am not able to get my tivo to recognize it, i messed with the jumper settings, and got no where. When i updated the orig disk to 2.52, could something have been done that wont allow it to see another drive unless it has 2.52 on it?

Any ideas would be appreciated.

It's virtually certain that the DSR6000 does NOT have LBA-48 support. I would also wonder if Xtreme 2.5 did either.

Bill thanks for your reply. I had a 80 gig maxtor and put 2.5 on it, the damn thing says acquiring info from the satellite, and stops exactly at 70%, but that is exactly where the orig drive stopped loading. It would seem to be hardware related, does it seem like that to you? Any ideas

I'm afraid I don't have any ideas, but I can commiserate. Just this morning my DSR6000 with Xtreme 3.1 on it started hanging at 70%.

I was able to get a bash prompt through the network card, so I tried "mfscheck" and "mfsassert -please" but neither worked. I then tried the emergency reinstall (code 52 at reboot) and it didn't work. I unplugged the unit and both sat connections, then re-plugged them one at a time. That didn't help. I deleted everything under /var/hack/xplusz and that didn't help. The system hung at 70% every time. I noticed that after sitting at 70% I could go to the Tivo menu then back to the "live tv" and instead of being at 70% it would be at 50%. It climb from 50% back to 70% and hang there.

Finally I broke out the instantcake cd I bought last July and instantcaked a spare drive I had. That got the unit running again, but doesn't help any for the recorded programs I have on the old drive.

I'm kind of wondering if somebody didn't just decide to do something with the sat feed to mess up Xtreme hacked boxes. Whatever the case, I have 3.5b running via instant cake, so my kids can get their daily dose of Noggin in the morning.

Wavicle, thanks for the information. You've pretty much confirmed that it's not a hardware issue. I've got a DSR6000 sitting in the closet with Xtreme 2.52 on it; it looks like I don't even have to bother trying it.

As far as what happened, there is a saying that goes roughly 'Never attribute to enemy action that which can be explained by simple stupidity.' It's more likely that some of the updates to the datastream aren't being handled by the outdated software, at least at boot time.

2.5Xtreme definitely did not have LBA48 support. At the time it was introduced there weren't many drives available that exceeded the 137GB limit so it wasn't needed.

I'm wondering if your issue is a spinoff of the 28% hangup we used to see with the S1 DTivos. Try rerunning guided setup and disconnect the sat feeds just before it attempts to acquire the sat data. It will eventually time out and prompt you if you wangt to retry or fix it later. Select the fix it later option and reconnect the sat inputs. Hopefully, it will finish acquiring the sat data this time around.

How many times have you given that advice, captain?

I'm running 2.5.2 on a couple of machines with large drives just fine -- after adding LBA48 support.

But I thought the large drive problems surfaced only when the out-of-bounds areas were accessed unsuccessfully? Maybe not?

I believe I saw the 50%-70% problem just as described, but on a rebuild of a 6.2a system. That was solved by a re-imaging.
