Ok, you are going to think i'm a bit of a twit about his, well I think i'm an bit of a twit about it, anyway, I edited my rc.sysinit file on my mac and ftp'd it back to my tivo (oops) Yes I know I should have used rc.sysinit.author, but it was late at night and I wasn't thinking properly. When I re-booted I got no tivo, just a powering up notice.

Luckily I'd backed up the original rc.sysinit file (no weird windows line returns on this file!!!!)
So I unplugged the drives from my tivo. Downloaded Mfstools 2.0 cd and booted up.
(only tivo drives and cd rom in pc)
I booted with vmlnodma hda=bswap hdb=bswap so I saw the partitions boot up ok (14 on hda and 4 on hdb). I then did bootpage -p /dev/hda and got a return of root=hda7.
Fabulous. I thought. then...

mkdir /mnt7
mount /dev/hda7 /mnt7

and I got /dev/hda7 Input/Output Error
!!!!! I don't understand. It was all fine, just one wrongly written file!!!

Can anyone tell me how I can mount this partition to replace my rc.sysinit file with the backed up one? I can mount a dos disk ok and a floppy with the backup file on, just not the tivo drive.
I've previously upgraded the tivo's HDs and added an ethernet card, so I've mounted the drive before and installed tivoweb etc etc, so I know it should work.
It's 1.30am now, so If I've missed something obvious then, sorry. HELP!!

Don't really see what the problem would be.. why don't you try the updated mfstools located here (http://www.mfslive.org).

thanks, just tried that. keep getting failed everytime I try to mount. Corrupt partition?
Can anyone recommennd a repair tool? I've kept my old drive A, so I could always restore it back to this one. But I'd be loathed to lose all my recordings, Turbonet settings, Tivoweb install, vserver etc.
(I was putting dserver.tcl on the tivo when It all went pear shaped)

Actually forgot to mount drive on secondary IDE, so it now boots as hdc not hda, as it says in the readme for tivo1 byteswapped drives.
I now get a more detailed failure when I mount

so I try mount /dev/hdc7 /mnt7

then I get lots of 'FAT unable to read boot sector attempt to access beyond end of device' comments and one 'isofs_fill_super: breadfailed dev=hdc7 iso_blknum=16 block=32'
interestingly when I bootpage -p /dev/hdc i get
root=/dev/hda7

hda?

This is not working out to be a good week

Sounds like a trashed drive, all right. How did it turn out?

Haven't had time to sort it out yet. My original Boot CD is in storage. I'd like to try that first. If that fails, I'll wipe this drive then re-copy my original A-Drive back onto it and re-install everything, though i will probably have lost all my recordings. I knew it was all going wrong, when Transfers of the recordings kept failing. I'll keep everyone posted when I sort it.
Thanks for the concern

All fine now. Bought new drives and software from TivoHeaven as my backup was corrupt. now I just have to restore mode 0 and other tweaks
