Hi there,
I'm pretty sure my parents' Series 3 hard drive is failing (choppy, stuttering GUI background fmv - after a restart it hangs before the text of the GUI is supposed to come up with the stuttering fmv...the hdd is also kind of loud).
So, I figured I'd try to fix it myself, and hopefully in the process upgrade with a WD 640. My only other experience is expanding the original Series 1 Sony, which was years ago so I don't remember much.
If the old HDD ends up being salvagable enough to copy the contents over, I plan to follow the guide at www.bumwine.com/tivo.html and am assuming I don't need to worry about anything else.
If the old HDD ends up being fubar, I'm a bit hazy on what exactly to do, but so far I have this plan:
I) Get Tivo.Series.3.TCD648250B.Virgin.Image.Supafly.mfs - done.
II) Use the nfo's instructions to put the mfs image on the new WD 640:
-Boot my PC with only the relavent drives (boot CD, SATA drive A with the Supafly mfs image, and new WD 640 SATA drive B).
-Use the following command to put the image on the WD 640: mfsrestore -s 127 -zxpi /mnt/tivo/Tivo.Series.3.TCD648250B.Virgin.Image.Supafly.mfs /dev/sdb
Questions:
Did I miss or mess up anything?
Are the weaknees interactive tivo upgrade instructions any better than the bumwine ones?
Do I have to worry about the cablecards not having the correct info and having to deal with the horrific cable company?
TIA very much to anyone who cares to help! :)
