I have a DSR 6000 (Philips) running v2.5.2 on a 40 gig harddrive. The problem that I'm experiencing now, is that the system deletes stuff fast as F--as though the drive is getting smaller. I've been running this machine, untouched, for some 7-8 years. Any suggestions? Anyone heard of this?

Upgrading the hard drive on a TiVo is nothing new. Is that a Series I or Series II Tivo? There are a number of ways to upgrade the drive. You can add a second drive, or you can copy the image of the first drive to a larger drive and expand the image. The easiest way, if you don't mind losing recordings, is to purchase an upgrade drive. The least expensive is using Win MFS or the MFS Live CD. See DVRupgrade (http://www.dvrupgrade.com/dvr/stores/1/), Weaknees (http://weaknees.com), or Win MFS (http://mfslive.org).
Note you will need an LBA-48 kernel to expand the partitions beyond 137G. You cna still use a 160G or larger drive, but without the LBA-48 kernel, the extra space is wasted. On the other hand, most people find 137G of storage to be plenty for SD video.

The DSR6000 is a DirecTV box, right?
The bitrate of DirecTV broadcasts can vary widely. I have seen hour long shows that were 0.75GB, and I have seen hour long shows that were 2.25GB. Most are in the 0.9-1.2GB/hr range.
Have your viewing habits changed recently? For example, football from my local stations is usually in the 1.75GB-2.00GB/hr. That could chew up an entire 40 GB drive in 20 hours.

So perhaps DTV is sending larger program sizes. I didn't know if there is a code to enter. By the way, the DSR6000 is a DirecTV box. Thanks for the replies. Is there a list of codes that I can look at? ie. enter play enter 30 enter for the 30 second skip.
Thanks all!!!

Do you have a lot of season passes or recordings with the recording preferences set to keep until you delete? If so, whenever a new recording is made with a higher priority, older programs will get deleted to make room for them. Change your recording preferences to allow shows to be deleted to make room for new recordings and they'll stick around longer. I know this may not make sense but any existing shows that have been recorded plus any new shows in the To Do List set as KUID are taken into account when determining the amount of available space on the drive. Upcoming recordings set as KUID already have space reserved for them so older recordings of a lower priority will get dumped as a result. If the drive gets full of shows set to KUID then the Tivo will stop recording new shows until you free up some space.

Thanks for that captain video! That is precisely the issue! ...and yes, it does make sense after you explained it. Thank you again...
