I am new as of today, and your question is the closest thing I can find to an answer to my question - "Can you record DVD's onto Tivo?"

I am assuming you can from your post, but after doing a search on this forum I cannot find out how. (I can find only one other reference, in fact, and it too just mentions that it can be done, but doesn't detail how.)

Please help.

Thanks.

Bottom line is this. You *can* do this, just like you could record a VCR, camcorder, 8mm tape, whatever. You just plug the device into the TiVo's source input. The problem with DVDs in particular is that most DVD players have a copy protection in place called MacroVision. This basically distorts the picture when it gets passed through a VCR (or a TiVo for instance), so that the picture is less than pleasing.

MacroVision is not a consistent copy protection either. I've seen MacroVision cause colors to blur, I've seen it just make the picture kind of 'pulse' with colors, I've seen it completely scramble the picture so you can't make out anything, etc. It will do *something* to your picture.

The key to recording DVDs to a VCR, TiVo, or anything else, is to buy a DVD player that has no MacroVision protection, or better yet, has the ability to turn it off at will by a menu option. These DVD players are *not* common, and to buy one, you'll have to buy a lesser-known brand rather than a Sony for instance. Multi region DVD players are easier to come by than those that can remove MacroVision protection. Thankfully, my DVD player can do multi-region *and* macrovision removal. Unfortunately, nobody sells the DVD player I have anymore.

You can record a DVD onto the TiVo. The only catch is that if the DVD was copy protected (with macrovision) then it will still be copy protected when played back from the tivo.

As far as changing the name - the easiest way (if you have tivonet) would be to run TiVo Web. This lets you edit the information straight from your web browser.

I have already recorded over 30 DVD on my Tivo. I guess I need Is Tivonet to change the name on the playlist.
