Dear educated PVR hackers, (hehe)

I have a standalone Tivo that I am selling, and I am looking to buy a DirectTivo. What would you suggest?

Which model? Which mods? etc.

I already know that I want to make these modifications to whatever I buy:

1. Install the xtreme25 image (if one day I could ever locate it....lots of searching with no luck yet)
2. upgrade the hard drives (notice this may or may not come before #1 as I haven't done enough research to know
about that yet...but any guidance to HowTo's or places to RTFM would be appreciated)
3. Do I need TivoNet or not..ie what does it give me if I can't stream the shows from the hacked DirectTivo or not. (again thanks for passing along any experiences you have)
4. Will DirectTivo and xtreme25 work w/ hacked HU cards? (I don't have one..but just thought I would ask in case I find one under a rock one day)

Thanks in advance for any knowledge or info you can pass my way.

ATM, I was thinking about either
the Phillips DSR 6000, or the Hughes GXCEBOT, or the Sony T60.

Again thanks for any info you can provide.

Signed: wanker (hehe what a funny nick)

wanker...

I'm new at this too...I visited my bro-in-law during christmas and he had a Tivo unit. I fell in love with it...I came back home after the holidays...I started reading about 4 days ago and this is what I'm doing.

I find it hard to believe that you haven't located xtreme with lots of searching and no luck yet. My first search (any search engine will do) was "TiVO Hacking"...that was it...I found numerous sites (including this forum) and didn't stop reading/downloading info for 8 hours.

So my advice? Keep searching...

I don't think anyone else has answered your post because it asks for too much...and you don't even have anything yet..other than ideas...just my .02

Anyways...

(1) I ordered a Hughes GXCEBOT from a guy on ebay for $150 (delivered) that was contract free. I like Hughes (and word has it that it is identical to the Phillips) and own two Hughes DTV receivers.

(2) I dl'd xtreme from pitoudistro.com. They have a xtreme section that contains EVERYTHING you need to know.

(3) I ordered a 120 GB Maxtor Hard Drive from Dirt Cheap Drives for $235.

(4) I'm going to Bless that drive and add it to my GXCEBOT for ~150 hours of recording space.

(5) The Dave part of the DirecTiVo units is completely separate from the TiVo part...so Yes, hacked HU, H (with HU cam zkt), and emu will work. I don't do that kind of stuff though ;)

I suggest that until you get your DTiVo, upgrade Drive, xtreme, etc, that you search not only this forum but the internet...The Truth is Out There.

BBQ-AllStar,
Thanks for the reply. True in hind sight I did ask a bit to much in my first post...oh well so much for a good impression.

I am going to order a Phillips for $99 from
a place I found on the net...so hopefully all will work out well w/ that.

Good luck with your setup....if I am successful with mine (or even if I am not) then I will be sure to answer any questions you have....I may not know much about this now..but after more reading I am sure that I will.

;)
