View Full Version : Heat from 2 HD's
I want to add 2 HD's to my DSR6k - I want to put a 80GB + 40GB (original HD) using 2xtreme. The 40GB Fireball (appropriately named) gets hot as all hell. Should I just use the 80GB or use the 40 to put mp3's in my PC? HEAT + IC = DEAD.

One Hard Drive is better than two.
Unless you need Lots of space.
Less Heat and less work on the power supply.
Should make things last a bit longer without breaking.
I have one 120 gb maxtor in mine.

I have a philips 6000 with a 40gig fireball and a maxtor 5400rpm 80 gig in it. I bought for 329.00 CDN. The thing sounds really loud too???
Anyway on boxing day I ended up picking up a WD 80 gig 7200RPM HD from futureshop for 200.00 CDN and I added it to my T60 that I plan on keeping for a long time and the T60 actually runs quieter than the 6000?
The temperatures on the 2 machines are always the same temp too. Right around 47 degrees celcius. So I would say, go ahead and add the second drive, I wouldnt worry about a temperature problem. You can always add a higher quality/speed fan in the tivos too. Just do a search on the subject and you will come up with some recommendations on what fan to upgrade to.

I have two drives and mine's baking, around 69C. It runs somewhat cooler if its not in the entertainment center, so clearly I've got to address this, but its been like that for months, none the worse for wear yet... till it bursts into flames :-)
It still says "normal" though!

The stock DirecTiVo fan is a The Delta (AUB0612L) - rated 14.1 CFM @ 22.5 dB. Since it is a standard 60x60x25mm fan, you can replace it with any similiar sized fan.
Depending on your personal noise/cooling ratio, here are several that will work. (http://www.coolerguys.com/cpucool/medfans.shtml)
Something to consider: I was able to lower my unit by 10 degrees Centigrade, just by putting an exhaust fan in the rear of my glass front stereo cabinet. If you dont get rid of the hot air, bigger and/or multiple fans wont do anything but just swirl that air around, cooling nothing.

I just put two new Maxtor 7200 RPM 80 Giggers in my GXCEBOT last week. They shot the temp from 47C to about 59C. I took the cover off and it went down to 45C. While the top was off I drew a neat pattern of dots on the power supply side of the unit and proceeded to drill them out. It made a neat (sorta pro looking) geometric pattern of holes and now I get 49C with the cover on. I will most likely upgrade the internal fan too but this was too easy!:D

Great Job mumblyjoe.
I may do the same. I thought about cutting a round hole on top of the unit (same spot you drilled holes) and puting a chrome grill and fan.
Would this cause too much stress on the power suppy?? Does anyone have any idea if running a second hard drive and fan would tax the system more than just running a bit hotter??
Thanks

Good question about the power supply!
I added a 120gig 7200 wd hard drive to my phillips 6000. The temp shot up where the outside of the case got real warm so I added a fan to the top.( right above where the hard drives are mounted. ) Its acually cooler now then before I added the new drive. Its not real appealing but screw it.

The power supply/case design is designed to handle two drives. The power supply isnt stressed! That being said, some (me included) still think that what TiVo says is normal is still too hot, hence the cooling mods.
