Could someone summarize what partitions 4, 7, and 9 are for? I mounted partition 7, and it seems to contain a clean, original image of stuff I've already edited on my boot partition (like rc.sysinit).
I'm sure someone's been here before, but 4 7 and 9 are too short for keywords in search. Any dirt would be welcome!
Thanks,
Dave
Here is a link that describes the partitions

Ah yes, but has it been updated for 2.5 ?

I am not sure.
If you have some light to shed, please indulge us.

why would it need to updated?

Merely a question. I thought the partitions, or at least their purpose, may have changed a bit with the 2.5 update.
For example, when you do that fixup02c thing, you mount a different partition than you did in 2.0... or don't you?

Ahh..
the data on the kernel(3 and 6), and root(4 and 7) partitions varies depending on how your tivo got there, unless you built your system with an extreme image, you will need to determine which is active and which is spare on your own.
partition 9 is always /var, no matter which system you use (i.e. it's shared)

Since we're on the discussion of Tivo partitions...
Why ARE there 2 initrd partitions and 2 root partitions?

there are 2 so they can swap for an upgrade, and have an automatic fallback.

>>fallback<<
Yeah...thats the cool thing. When new software is downloaded, it re-formats/re-installs the other partition, then makes it active and re-boots. So technically you always have two versions on your disk. The one your running, and the previous version.
This is confusing to some people and explains why sometimes they make changes, and dont see anything happen! They are changing the in-active partition.

So when an update is downloaded, where is it downloaded to? Is it download to /var/packages?
If so, is it downloaded to the current partition?
It would seem that updates would go to the current partition and then be expanded to the "alternate" partition, but does anyone know?

that's the way that the 2.x -> X.xx upgrades worked.
As of 2.5 the upgrades are loaded directly into mfs, though system updates are probably still decompressed to /var/??? immediately before installation
