View Full Version : Any way to improve Philips DSR6000's sluggish Program Guide?

I was all used to the clear looking & snappy Program Guide of 5th gen RCA 420RE receiver.
Then I got the Philips DSR6000 DirecTIVO unit. Otherwise great, but I noticed a much UGLIER and SLOWER program guide that I just can't get used to. Colors are ugly, the refresh rate as you scroll is so slow it drives you nuts, and there's no easy way of triggering filter for movies or sports the way the "bottom line" RCA unit did.
Are all Philips DSR6000 owners experiencing this?
I have not "upgraded" to the Xtreme25. Is that going to change the look and speed of menus in anyway? Am I stuck with this?
Any comments by other DSR6000 owners (and anybody else who has any opinions/knowledge/options) would be appreciated.

Check your remote to see if it has page on the channel up and down button. On the button itself it would say chan/page. If it does you have to call the manufacturer and have them replace the remote. It did make it snappier but still slower than the stand alone recievers. These units have to process much more info. That makes them somewhat slower. LOL cdsshu

If you are running version 2.0 of the s/w, then you REALLY need to upgrade. 2.0.1 was much faster in the guide area. and I believe 2.5 was slightly better than that.

the guides are faster in 2.0.01 and 2.5 becuase they went to a 2 week guide instead of the original format of 4 weeks...so there is only half the info for the guide to sort through

Thanks for the input, guys.
My Philips DSR6000 is already running the 2.5 software.
But the guide that I'm referring to as being slow is the DirectTV guide.
I noticed the receiver gives me a choice between DirectTV guide and TIVO guide.
I prefer the DirectTV guide. I assumed this guide is unrelated to the software version of TIVO. Am I mistaken?
And from looking at screeenshots of other direct tv receivers, it seems the same program data stream is processed and displayed uniquely by each receiver/brand. I guess the Philips DSR6000 just chose to have a slow and ugly display....
Anybody have experience with the HUGHES DirectTIVO unit?
Or the SONY? Are they faster by any chance?
I really like my RCA's guide. Anybody know if RCA is coming out with a DirecTIVO unit?
ANY comments on the above would be appreciated.
Thanks.

phillps and hughes are exactly the same .........give it about 2 weeks with you ....and when the guide totally fills in about 2 days or so ........you'll be used to it ......i came form the 420re also and man was i spoiled .........but im used to it now ............
now you can go up to 10 day or so in advance on guide and see what ppvs are comming too

I hear your pain man cuz' I feel the same way. The guide is even slower than my previous Sony B3 reciever. I don't think there is ANYTHING we could to speed it up other than waiting for the 2nd gen DTiVo unit.
Basically try to look at it this way...compare the 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen to the 4th and 5th gen of RCA DTV receiver and look at how big the unit was and how slow the guide was. I think TiVo will go thru the same phase too. The first two or three generations are usually the "proof of concept" units and they don't really spend a whole lot of time to tweak the unit. However, it WILL happen, but it is a matter of time....
l8er.
I've noticed one real difference between the TiVo's and the RCA's. The TiVos don't display the information in the guide until all the data on each show is loaded where the RCA didn't load the specific show data until the show was selected. I think this is what causes the delay

maybe someone w/ more knowledge on the actual coding itself might be able to change that? Could it be in MyWorld? I have no clue, just a thought.
any way to upgrade the tivo hardware itself, like the processor, or memory?
If so I'd have to think we'd see a big difference. Anyone know where I can find info on upgrading the hardware?
