Sadly my tivo went missing a few days ago. I looked all over the local retail shops and nobody caries the DSR6000 anymore. I ended up buying from the net.

Anyway, I read a few atricles about a guy who's Mac was stolen and he set it up using Timbukto(sp) to call home and get the caller ID information to catch the crook.

That let me to think that maybe the same thing could be done with a DirectTivo. Not having the phone line in, the call would fail everytime.....however a thief may not know not to plug it in. When he does and it is time to call it would call the house and I would get caller ID information. It's a long shot, but after two break-ins..... Any ideas?

I do have an alarm!

Trouble is house is under remodel and seems some workmen have sticky fingers on occasion.

Smartass comments not withstanding, does the idea have technical merit.

Well, did you call DirecTV and tell them it was stolen? Did you call TiVo and tell them as well? If he/she/it tries to sign it up, then you can be sure they will know who has it.
