It’s been a bad two days.

Yesterday I sent a post asking for help getting locals. Thanks to everyone who responded through posts and PMs. This morning I got up to gather some information for another post as I am still having problems getting my locals to work and found that my problems have gotten worse. Here’s my story.

On the advice of several, I changed out my main, mvchannels and channels files. Being sure that the channels file was edited and converted to a Unix format. I followed the instructions for testing my fix (ie ./mvchannels.tcl reset and then ./mvchannels.tcl reload and ./mvchannels.tcl -file=./channels.dat ). Everything appeared to work great with the exception that I also had Orlando channels (ie Ch, ST, ML, LA and IN were in the 900’s and NY and OR were in 1-99). But I believe that the OR problem might be something wrong with my EMU and I was not going to worry about it until later.

Any way. As soon as I updated my rc.sysinit file with the line that is needed to keep the channels in their proper place and rebooted, all of my channels moved to the 1-99. I had many channels in the 2’s, 4,s, 5’s and so on. One for NY, CH, IN, ST, ML, and LA and of courses those pesky Orlando channels were there too. At this time I’m not too worried about the Orlando problem. I figured I could fix that problem once I got the other channels working properly.

Now here’s the real problem that I woke up to this morning. I woke up this morning and decided to gather some data to post here to get some help with the above problem. When I tried to edit rc.sysinit to copy the last 10 lines so I could post them here, I noticed that EDIT and JOE did not work. Hmmmm, that is strange. So I rebooted the Dtivo and tried again. No luck. So I decided to go to the /var/hack directory and see what was going on there. That’s when I noticed that the HACK directory was gone. Errrrr!!!!! No!!!!!

I have no idea what happened to it. I can’t believe it is gone. This can’t be! I did nothing last night that would have removed the HACH directory. It was there when I went to bed last night and the Dtivo is still up and working. I’m hoping that there is a simple fix or command that will bring it back. But I’m totally lost right now.

If anyone has experienced this problem or knows what I can do to get back to where I was last night please give me a helping hand here. I’m by no means an expert on this stuff but I’m no dummy either. I know my way around a hack:)

Thanks in advance for your time,

ThreeIees

When your TiVo rebooted it deleted and recreated the var directory. This could have been caused by an unclean reboot or there was to much junk, log files etc. in the var.

Not to worry though easy fix.

Just down load this hack. zip file and decompress it and zmodem the intire directory to your var directory.

Once you have the hack directory back on the tivo make sure you do a chattr +i * inside the hack directory. This will prevent the tivo from being able to delete the contents of your var/hack directory.

Three,

You should also check the boards for discussions about "log files" and how to truncated them or stop them from being created. That is why your /var/hack went away. When it rebooted the Tivo figured it didnt have enough room, so it woped /var clean.

Well I followed the instructions here and now I'm have my HACK directory back. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also moved my channels, main and mvchannels files back to hack and re-edited the rc.sysinit even being sure there was a space before the brackets in the 2 lines above where the mvchannels command goes. I restarted the system and:

1) now all the Orlando channels are gone from the 1-99. Yeahhhh!!!!

2) all of the ST, CH, IN, ML NY and LA channels are in the 1-99.

I did a ps ax and did not see mvchannels listed as an active program. So I am assuming the mvchannels command at the end of the rc.sysinit is not getting executed. So when I go home I will mess with it a little more and then probably post the last 10 or so lines of my rc.sysinit file here for you experts to look at.

I'm almost there - I can smell it:)

See you all tonight when I get home. I'm sure I wont be able to solve this myself.
