Question Direct tivo and a "digital network recorder"

As I was browsing though the posts I saw people who's equipment inculded what I took to be a direct tivo and a regular Tivo. WHy would anyone want anything but a dirct Tivo if they have a satellite? I have someone who is willing to give me a SRV 3000 still in the box and legally purchased but I don't know what I would use it for. Any ideas?

A stand alone Tivo can record off cable, as well as satellite (with external sat receiver). However, it only has one tuner, the picture quality isn't as good as the combo boxes, and you MUST let it dial in, since the guide data comes over the phone, not the sat.

    then why have both?

Yes I know those things - that is why I wonder why someone would have both units if they had satellite.
