Hard disk diagnostics?

I've got a drive in my HDR2 that I think is going bad. I've seen references on the board to "Disk diagnostics" but I've never seen anything specific.

So, two questions... First, can I run diagnostics on a drive while it's still in the HDR2, or do I have to pull the drives and put them in a PC?

And second, what disk diagnostics should I use?

you have to pull the drives and put them in a pc. each disk manufacturer has their own doagnostic programs; poke around on the websites of the makers to find more info. here's some starters:

maxtor = powermax
quantum = qpms
ibm/hitachi = featuretool
