It's standard practice to use the larger of the two drives as your A drive. It really shouldn't matter which one is configured as the A or B drive but I believe this is what Hinsdale recommends.
What is the best drive configuration for performance. I have a hdr312 currently with a maxtor ultra133 7200 rpm 40Gb. I plan on installing 120Gb in this Tivo I have a Ultra133 7200rpm 80Gb or a 120Gb I can use. I realize heat & noise are factors but with those set aside what will give me the best performance.
A. Leave the 40 as A Drive and add the 80 as B Drive.
B. Install the 80 as A Drive and add the 40 as B Drive.
C. Install the 120 as A Drive and remove the 40.
I was thinking the c. configuration would be most likely to have a performance gain since it won't share the IDE channel with any other device. But A. configuration seems like it might help having the abilty to seek across 2 disks. I'm not sure how TiVo handles the storage as far as reading and writing to the drives. If you might be able to enlighten me on this I am all ears (eyes).
Thanks in Advance,
I Can't believe

Thanks for the input. I really just want to know which configuration will yield the best performance. Does anyone know if I adding another 16meg of ram to this will make any noticable difference? I would suspect after I upgrade to 120gig the additional memory would help. I hate to go through the trouble if there is not a noticable gain.
Thanks in advance.
I sincerely doubt you'd see any difference in performance no matter which configuration you tried. I haven't owned a SA Tivo in years so I can't comment on the additional memory. If you feel confident about soldering surface mount components then I'd say go for it. 9th Tee says it helps and it's not all that expensive so what the heck. However, I'd look for some feedback on whether it actually works before I took a soldering iron to my Tivo.
