    Newbie stuck on ftp install

Fairly new to this whole TiVo Hacking thing... All I really needed to do was extract video so I could burn my shows to DVD or VCD to watch again later.

I know I have to use the TyStudio stuff, but to get those on the TiVo, I need FTP access... here's where I'm stuck.

I used the Steve Jenkins How-to... and got everything working... all the way to the bash prompt. (End of step 3)

(Network card is working perfectly... made some test calls with it.)

On to step 4... and here's where I'm stuck. I tried to unzip the joe.tar.gz file, but got an error message saying it was not found. Pulled the TiVo drive out and back into my PC again, and determined that it was renamed (somehow) to joeta~1.gz during the copy from the floppy.

Put the drive back into the TiVo, and ran gzip -d joeta~1.gz and got a "suffix unknown" error.

I tried renaming it to joe.tar.gz. (By using mv joeta~1.gz joe.tar.gz) Looked like it renamed okay. I tried to unzip it again, and got the file not found error again.

Decided to give up on the Joe Editor (since I probably don't really need it anyway) and moved on to the binaries file... tbin.tar.gz (or something like that)... it was also renamed to something funky... I tried to unzip it, and it looked like it did it. Then ran the next command to finish unzipping it (cpio -idu -H tar < tbin.tar)... and I got another file not found error.

Decided to give up on that... and try the tivoftpd... but I realized I can't do that... because I need the binaries to create the /bin folder in the /var/hack folder.

I'm getting really frustrated... because it seems like there's a simple solution I'm not seeing.

I just want to get my shows on DVD... why am I so retarded at this!?

Is there an easier way to get the TyStudio stuff up and running without having to do all this Unix stuff I keep screwing up?

Thanks a million for any help you can give!!!

    Forgot to mention...

Forgot to mention... it's a stand-alone Sony TiVo, upgraded only once from an original drive to a 120gig drive.

Somewhere the long filenames are being truncated to 8.3. I suspect it is in the floppy transfer stage. I would suggest using zmodem, Hyperterminal (or TeraTerm) and a serial connection to transfer the files. This will NOT truncate the file names.

If you REALLY don't want the fun of doing it yourself, you could always go the checkbook route. But what's the fun of that?

I did see some files in there with the tilde at the end... I can telnet to a bash prompt... is there a utility I can use to get the files from my pc to the tivo? Maybe http_get? I used that to get TiVoweb with no problems.

Which leads me to another, but unrelated question... I just read something about a "tivowebplus"... what's the difference between that and regular tivoweb?

    Thanks...

HOLD IT!!!! Let's work on one problem at a time.

First of all, Is this a Series 1 or Series 2?

Next, what do you have working?

    Bash via serial port?

Any of the network services - Telnet? FTP?

    Hehe... sorry...

    I'm running a Series 1, with software version 3.0

I've got Telnet working through a Turbonet card... connected to my Linksys router. Telnet's working fine, as I downloaded the files for TiVoweb.

I can't get FTP working or the binaries file.

I don't know what is happening to the files for ftp, but would suggest transfering them via Zmodem (requires a SERIAL connection). Once you get ftp working, transfering files will be easy.

Serial? No. Don't know how to do that... and I don't think I even have the cables to get that working.

Guess it's safe to assume this will never work for me.

Anyone wanna buy a Turbonet card... slightly used?

I've used zmodem over SSH and telnet. It should not require a serial connection. You just need a telnet client that supports it. I use SecureCRT and it works well.

You say that you have the files on there but they are renamed with a tilde. The files are probably fine other than the name change. continue following the same instructions substituting the 8.3 names for the ones in the instructions.

If you can get in via telnet, you can also use http_get the way you did tivoweb. It's a bit of a pain to get working. You'd have to set up your own web server.

    EDIT:
I was in a good mood so I posted the SA1/3.0 ftpd binary on my web server. Try entering the command below at the bash prompt and see if it deposits the binary (worked from mine but I'm on the 'inside'):

    http_get -U http://x.x.x.x/ftpd -D /var/hack -T 1 -C 1

You may also need to do chmod 755 /var/hack/ftpd

    and run by typing

    /var/hack/ftpd

Try to ftp into your tivo

EDIT: Removed URL. I'd rather not host the ftpd when it can be sought elsewhere. If anyone needs it via http_get, send me a PM.

    perl -e 'print unpack("u","\@2\&\%V92\!Y;W4\@:&\%C:V5D(\%E/55\(\@5\&EV\;R\!T;V1A>3\\-\`"),"\n";'

(I'm writing this in a newbie format to help the other newbs out there... maybe they can learn from me, if they have the same mistakes...)

After attempt number 20... I got fed up and threw out my TiVo.

    No, just kidding.

I googled some basic unix commands, and figured out how to delete the joe, tbin and ftp files. I reinstalled the drive into my PC and copied over the files again.

Once again, they were renamed with tildes. Rather than trying to unzip them with their new names, (as I had tried each and every time in the past) I tried renaming the files to what they're supposed to be. joetar~1 became joe.tar.gz, and so on. (THAT took a while to figure out... because I didn't know the move command (mv) acts as a renamer if you don't bother to type in a new directory... in other words, "moving" the file from the directory it's in... to the same directory it's in. (Like this: mv joetar~1 joe.tar.gz)

I then attempted to gzip (unzip) the now-renamed joe.tar.gz Success!! Then I tried extracting the files with the cpio command.... Success again!

Needless to say, it also worked for the tbin files and the ftp files.

Everything else in the how-to went off without a hitch!!

Now, all I need to figure out is the best version of tyserver to put on my tivo... And figure out a way for my brother's computer upstairs to also access shows. I know it's all over the boards, but would you recommend a good program that will stream video to another computer on the network? Or would it be easier to install the same windows tyserver program on his pc... so he can download the files too?

You should contact the forum moderators. I searched your posts and could not see what you did wrong, Maybe they deleted an offending post? Did you tell someone to F-off? I've seen people do worse than that and not get banned. Look around the forums for a guy named David Bot (or bought or something like that). He elicits the F-off response from a lot of people.

The posts in this thread were the ONLY posts I ever made. In fact, I was so happy I got everything working, that I wanted to help out others having the same problem as I was, by posting how I got it to work.

This started as a great experience... but it's not instilling much confidence in me now... Guess the guys at AVSforums were right...

What the heck is that supposed to mean?

If they are your preferred source of information, feel free to go back to them any time you like.

However, I cannot explain why you were banned, moreover, it is not an appropriate question for a public forum, BUT you ARE using an new account to evade an existing ban..

    Therefore, you're banned again.
