NewBie w/series2 +HMO question

Sorry for the newbie question but. Do i still have to rip my hdd out and run Sleeper to add hacks if I have HMO active?
Can you telnet or ssh in from linux or is the tivo locked down until the hack is added to tivo hdd via Sleeper?

All I am looking to do is copy my records off the Tivo so I can make a personal dvd , I am not looking to add a larger HDD.

You need to preform the hacks any time you want to make a change to the default software.

I know thats a vauge answer but it is complete.

Another thing you could do to make your own dvd's is wait for TivoToGo but given the rate at which tivo is bringing it to market you might be quite old before that happens.
