Quick update. My problem was faulty hardware. So if you all run into this - check the hardware. The symptom of the hardware ... when running a known good disk, once the OS finally loads, the tivo flips out. Changes screens every 1/2 second and makes the blip sound every time. Kind of like a posessed remote control.

Replaced hardware (with last known Hughes unit in Chicago - after returning POS R10 dtv garbage back to circuit city). All fine and booting! Now on to the next problems!

    Tivo on the other box

Got it loaded on two tivos and most of everything is fine. My only issue now is that I can see what is on the other tivo but can not watch them. What I get is that when I slect a program I get that that tivo is no longer available. Any ideas

    My Thanks as well...

Thank you for your posting of the information for doctoring up my DirecTivo. I was able to find this site via google, read for a bit to determine how things work, find a step by step guide here , hop down to Fry's to pickup a new 120 harddrive and USB nic, paid my $5 homage to PTVUpgrade for their iso disk of utilities and built up a clean new drive in one of my spare pc's. Popped the new drive into the Tivo (tucked away the old 40gb drive for safekeeping, just in case), completed the steps and did the clear-n-delete, and voila! Everything works like a charm. I now have 107 hours of record time, HMO features and network access to the unit. Installed ty tools and downloaded some recordings and converted to mpegII. I am one satisfied customer!

You folks make what could easily be complicated very "do-able" and accessible to the masses. So... thanks! No way anyone could figure ALL of this stuff out on their own.

I could have written the same post as buddmann55. Thanks to all of you for helping me stay a TiVo customer and not succumb to DTV's upcoming home media receiver/DVR...

I would also add that I had a blast doing the upgrade!

    Decompression Error Information/question...

When I was first doing my 4.x+RID upgrade I was using a 160GB drive and ran into the decompression error doing the MFSrestore. I tried it a dozen times and it returned the same error but with various different compression levels and progress. Disconnected the 160GB and hooked up a 120 and it worked first time.

I've searched and read as much as I can on the forum and there doesn't appear to be a solution to this other than using the lowest amount of compression when doing a save. But that wasn't an option for me because I was restoring the image that I purchased from PTVUpgrade (which I extracted from the ISO file).

From what I read, the 4.x_RID upgrade for dtivo should support drives larger than 120GB, correct? I'm guessing that maybe has something to do with the HD itself (brand new out of the plastic) and not necessarily the size. Any thoughts would be appreciated. I have another (nonRID) dTivo that I would like to upgrade and use that 160GB if possible...

I used the exact same method as you with my SD-DVR80, but with a 250GB (same as in the HDTivo). I worked like a charm and it reported the increased capacity in hours during the "restore" step.

    Reboots

My system reboots randomly so I looked at the log but I don't know what it means. I'm thinking it's a bad sector because of some of the glitches I see on screen now and then. The reboot happened when I was transfering a show to it then went to watch a different show when it started the Tivo rebooted.

    Thanks for any ideas.
    Rob

    Pay PerView Issue

I have completed the v4.0 upgrade on my directv drv7000/17. After doing it 2 times, then READING the instructions and FOLLOWING them it worked as advertized.
Thanks to all the people who spent way to must time puting these howto's together and thanks to your wife/girlfriend or whatever you have for putting up with it.

On to the question. When I go to the PAY PERVIEW channels they come no problem. But if I try to order one it will say that it needs to switch from live to tv to get pricing info.. ok? I say ok. Then it says it can n ot find pricing and will not let me BUY the movie.. I have gone through all the setting and checked and double checked.
Did I miss something ? I have done a search for PAY PERVIEW, PAYPERVIEW and a few others and have not found much.

Again thanks for all your hard work and any help.

You have to order PPV shows on the net, not from your remote.
    There's no place like ~/

Not calling in disables your ability to order PPV using the remote, as your unit should not be calling D* any longer, and thus cannot report PPV usage.

im just curious... i did the upgrade as well and we have not connected a phone line to our direcTivo and it is blocked on the network so how did we order a pay per view movie the other night? i just went through the normal process of ordering a movie and now it shows up just fine. I had trouble with moving this movie to another tivo using HMO, just curious if it just a crummy stream or PPV has something that stops the transfer? it always cuts out between 3 and 5 minutes while other transfers go fine. so whats the deal with PPV and any thoughts on the transfer would be appreciated...

How long has it been since you hacked it? If it was less than 30 days, you can still order a PPV. I doubt there's any effect on the quality of the movie itself.

it has been less than 30 days, yes. probably about 2 weeks for this unit. what will happen after 30 days? from what i've read the card stores up to 25 purchases then won't let you purchase anymore, does that sound right? so as long as i have the phone disconnected and the network blocked i can purchase 25 ppv movies before i have to go online to start ordering them?

    sir-4040r or sir-s4040r?

I've gone through lots of the threads and have tried all kinds of things, but I am always stuck at the "Powering up, Please wait" page. So far I've done the following:

    - mfsrestore from a good 4.x image
    - took a pristine 3.1.1c kernel and kilhdinitrd' it
    - placed it in /var/vmlinux.px then dd it to /dev/hdx3 and /dev/hdx6
    - installed the init framework, put the LBA48 kernel into /init
    - put the 4.x dssapp into /tvbin
    - changed the bootpage
    - created rc.sysinit.author

When none of this worked, I thought it may have been a problem with putting the kernel into the bootpartitions. I read somewhere that after doing dd to the partition, it should read 1+1 records in, 1+1 records out. But instead I get something like 3605+0 records in, 3605+0 records out.

When I put down the image, I also tried mfsrestore with the -b flag and without. No luck.

I got desparate and tried installing a 3.1.5 kernel and 4.0.1a kernel just in case. No luck.

I can't even get the instantcake image I bought for the S4120R to boot.

One caveat (which shouln't matter). I'm doing all this from a laptop with a USB HD enclosure. I use the knoppix lite cd and insmod the usb-storage module. Then the drive shows up on /dev/sda. Everything seems to work well from here.

I spent 16 hours straight yesterday and finally had to call it a night. Wife's gonna kill me if I don't figure this out soon. Can someone point me in a direction, any direction?
I was just wondering......I've seen the samsung model referred to as the "sir-s4040r" and "sir-4040r". Are there any differences between these two, or are they the same thing? Thanks.

strange working fine for me... I have been ordering ppv with the remote... over a month since I hacked it and I have checked on my online account at direct tv and it is getting the ppv purchases... I have network access from outside my local net to the box disabled (via a firewall)... but I do have a phone line connected to it so that elseed and caller it works however under system information service connection it says last success. monday jan 18th... (current always says failed ... service unavailable) so it is not these calls that is getting the ppv purchases to directtv.. it must be making some other call at times with no issues... so it appeares you can use the remove to order ppv if the phone is connected..

the only think that sucks is that it will only let me buy current ppv ... ones in the future don't have a buy option.. haven't figured a way around it yet.. and I allready did the ppv patch to tivoapp..

    ie
    echo -ne "\x00\x00\x00\x00" | dd conv=notrunc of=tivoapp bs=1 seek=1268492

it even has my adult ppv block that I purchased today with the box already on my directtv account

also here is a section of my tcclient.upload log and as you can see the network calls are failing (as they should) I left out the ports that have my ip addresses:
