    29 4.01b image on HDVR2

I downloaded a 4.01b image off of emule (tivo_4.0.1b-02-2-240.mfs). I tried slapping this on my DTivo HDVR2(3). Now according to what I have seen on this forum this image should fire right up on an HDVR2. I am getting a powering up message then a blip and red/blue screen. Nothing more.

Did I missunderstand something or do I have a bad image.

    Process:
    Tivoscript CD to boot.
    mfsrestore -pxi /cdrive/tivo_4.0.1b-02-2-240.mfs /dev/hdb
Says it restores clean and that I now have 140 hours avail.

    But doesn't work in Tivo?

Sounds like a bad image to me. I pulled a clean image from a friend's SA DTV then I booted using dtv boot cd (though the regular mfstoos 2.0 would work as well) and did a very basic mfsrestore:

    Code:
    mfsrestore [-s 127] -bzpi /mnt/dos/tivo.bak /dev/hdb
I threw it in my HDVR2 and it booted right up. Then I did a 'clear and delete everything' (which took forever) and replaced the kernel with a killhdinitrd 4.01a kernel (per PlainBill's suggestion) and now it's ready to hack.

Or do yourself a favor like I did after going thru too many flaky kernals off emule and get the InstantCake version for $20. Then using an ISO tool like WinISO or MagicISO you can extract the mfs image from the .image directory. Its named something like 000001

Also make sure to get the version for a SA S2 since these are the ones that contain the latest 4.01b image. Exact model # is TCD240080. You can pay and download it immediately.

I just used mfsrestore on this image and am running just perfect.

As Bill suggested you can then do a 'clear and delete everything' and replace the kernel with a killhdinitrd 4.01a kernel. Thats what I did.

    Lightbulb Good Idea

Thanks I didn't realize I could get this from InstantCake. Nice option.

One followup question I noted that you didn't use the -x flag w/ mfsrestore. Any particular reason. I have been going through the doco on mfstools 2.0 and am not sure if -x is a good or bad thing. If my understanding is correct if I don't use this then the restore will not add the extra partitions to the new larger disk and I would be loosing space on the drive?

Oh: can you also supply link to PlainBill/Bill's info on the "clear and delete all"

There are two ways to do this. I prefer to restore and expand an image in one step with:

    mfsrestore -s 127 -xzpi /path/to/image /dev/hdc

Others prefer to restore, and then expand using mfsadd. As long as the swap partition is large enough (roughly 1 Meg swap space for every 2 Gig drive space), either way is satisfactory.

    Convert from 3.1.1.e to 4.01b

What is the latest HOWTO for HDVR2? I am running
    a 3.1.1e image on 3.1.1c killhdinit kernel.

I understnad I need to install the 4.01a kernel, and install
the 4.01b image. Is there an image that works best for HDVR2?

What are the mfsrestore command? Where do I install it?

Once I do this I need to install the hacks again? A HOWTO would be helpful.

No, a HOWTO would NOT be helpful. Read the stickies, learn to search. If you don't know how to use mfsrestore OR how to find out how to use it, you lack the basic knowledge required to hack your system. A HOWTo will leave you with a (partially) hacked system you are unable to maintain or fix.

    Ok...

OK. I have used mfsrestore before. My question is:

After I boot with MFSTools CD, running mfsrestore will
wipe out all partitions right? If there anyway to convert from 3.1.1e
to 4.01b without wiping out all partitions? Or is that not possible?

I noticed that there is 2 kernel partitions but only 1 image partition.

    Thanks.

You can upgrade via slices. AlphaWolf has generously made slices available on emule and started a thread describing how to use them. I have never done this so can't vouch for it's difficulty, but in general I believe it's a good idea to practice on a 'test' drive first.

You are incorrect; there are two root partitions and two kernel partitions.

I successfully upgraded from 3.1.1c on my SD-DVR40 that was originally sleeper'd - now killhdinitrd'd

Upgraded manually via slices - super patched - installed a few hacks - played with HMO and love it! ok So I want to backup my days work, so I did the following:

    (80gig drive)

    mfsbackup -f 9999 -6so /mnt/dos/s2_dtv_401.bak /dev/hdc

(from Hindsdale) worked and finished fine as always...

I then swapped another drive in /dev/hdc 120gig Maxtor to restore to and test the image/backup and use in my other sd-dvr40

    I used the following:

    mfsrestore -s 127 -bzpi /mnt/dos/s2_dtv_401.bak /dev/hdc

(from Hindsdale) worked and finished fine as always...

but the restored drive drive doesn't work...

    Welcome Powering Up ...

then goes to just a few more minutes... as normal

my NIC lites come on... flicker abit

sits for a minute or so, then when I expect the Satellite screen ..

it goes back to --- Welcome Powering up! and starts all over.

should I be using byte swapping? by dropping the -f 9999 will that correct the problem as questioned in a previous post?

I assumed that once I went through the time consumming part once I should beable to backup and restore at will... ??

(edit) I'm using the PTVUpgrade disc w/ Enhancements to boot from and run mfs tools 2.0

Please post the console output. It's kind of hard diagnosing these without it - my Crystal Ball was recalled.

Not exactly sure what fixed it ... but it's working for now.

    Plainbill;

    thanks for the attention...

I tried two things (both during one pass)

I redid the backup and restore -- changing the backup by removing the
    -f 9999 switch;

and I noticed my backed-up drive had a [master] set as the jumper instead of CS not sure if that had an effect but it is booting now!

    thanks ..

(edit) OOPS ... NO backgrounds ... here I go again..

    26 VERY puzzled!

    Ok;

I was able to get another drive restored via mfsrestore ..

however I can not do it from a file, which causes a problem for expansion.

I've started with a 80gig drive I had from a previous life.... to hack with. I hacked, converted from sleeper, upgraded to 4.01.b and super patched. All is well and HMO works fine. Happy life.

However, now that I want to restore my work to a 120gig drive I'm stuck. if I backup using:

    mfsbackup -f 9999 -6so /mnt/dos/s2dtv_401.bak /dev/hdc

    and restore using:

    mfsrestore -s 127 -bzpi /mnt/dos/s2dtv_401.bak /dev/hdc

    and expand using:

    mfsadd -x /dev/hdc

the drive works however ALL the menus are transparent and none of the sample HMO audio restored.(who cares... but noted.)

    if I do this:

    mfsbackup -Tao - /dev/hdc | mfsrestore -s 127 -zpi - /dev/hdd

life is good and the 120gig is a mirror image and works fine; however I'm unable to expand because it was already an expanded from an original 40gig image.

can't I FORCE mfs Tools to copy the background images/animations ?

    I thought the -f 9999 did that???

    can anyone shed some light?
