    Model Comparison

    Is there a guide somewhere that compares the different models?
    For example what's the difference between the TCD24004a
    and TCD140060 ? besides hard drive size.

    I don't know for sure, but this is what I came up with:

    Model format ABCDDD
    ABC being the first digits of a TiVo or AT&T brand Model, and the first 3 digits of the service number. DDD is a representaion of drive size.

    A is platform series:
    0 Series 1
    1 Series 2 Gen 1, USB 1.1 Standalone / Pre RID DirecTV DVR (USB 2.0)
    2 Series 2 Gen 2, USB 2.0 Standalone.
    3 Series 2 Gen 1, RID DirecTV DVR (USB2.0).
    4 Series 2 Gen 2, RID DirecTV DVR.
    5 Series 2.5 Gen 3, USB2.0 Standalone.
    6 Series 2.5 Gen3 , DirecTV DVR (R10)? (could be 5)

    B is manuufacturer:
    0 Philips
    1 Sony
    2 Toshiba
    3 AT&T
    4 TiV0
    5 Pioneer
    6 RCA/Thomson.
    7 Hughes
    8 Samsung
    9 Humax

    C is hardware configuration.

    0: Single HDD drive
    1 DirecTV DVR
    2 dual HDD.
    4 DVD player
    5 DVD recorder

    The UK TiVos might have a special SN designator also.

    You've got some errors in there. For DirecTiVos , A=1 is a non-RID DirecTivo (151 is a Hughes HDVR2), and A=3 is for RID DirecTiVo (301 is a Philips DSR708).

    Your list for B is incorrect; For DirecTiVos B=8 for Samsung (381 is a SIR-S4080R).

    The R10 is -521. I have never seen A=4 or 6.

    B is manuufacturer:
    0 Philips
    1 Sony
    2 Toshiba
    3 AT&T
    4 TiV0
    5 Pioneer
    6 RCA/Thomson.
    7 Hughes
    8 Samsung
    9 Humax
    7=Pioneer (275)
    5=Hughes (151, 351, 357, etc.)
    3=AT&T or Hughes (130, 031)
    2=RCA (121, 321, 521)
    6=Toshiba (264, 565)
    F=beta or internal testing units? Has anybody seen an 'F' unit?

    C is hardware configuration.

    0: Single HDD drive
    1 DirecTV DVR
    2 dual HDD.
    4 DVD player
    5 DVD recorder
    7=HD DTiVo (357)

    Never seen C=2.

    BTW: it would be helpful (and probably sticky material) if somebody wrote up a list of all the different motherboards, mapped it to model names / prefixes, and wrote up a little information about each one. (Pictures would be nice, too.) I'll start by listing the ones I have know of, from tivoconfig.h:

    Classic - Original Series1 SA boards (BORD=1xx)
    Combo - Original Series1 DirecTV boards (BORD=2xx)

    Original Series2.0 SA Uma1* (BORD=[3-9a]xx) - USB 1.1 (ADM chip)
    New Series2.0 SA Uma5 (BORD=5xx) - USB 2.0 (NEC chip)
    Original Series2.0 DTiVo Uma4 (BORD=c00)
    New Series2.0 DTiVo Uma6 (BORD=e00)
    Series2.0 HD DTiVo Phoenix (BORD=100axx)
    Toshiba Series2.0 SD-H400 DVD reader (BORD unknown)
    Pioneer Series2.0 DVD writers (BORD unknown)

    Humax/TiVo Series2.5 SA Uma7/Uma2c/Ibis (BORD=10xx)
    Humax/Toshiba Series2.5 DVD writers Elmo (BORD=12xx)
    DirecTV Series2.5 SD Bryce (BORD=21xx)

    Internally tivo calls all s2.5 units gen04.

    I was always figuring the "generations" would be like this:

    Series 1 SA: Gen01
    Series 1 DT: Gen02 (since they had a significantly new arch that added the stream encryption among other directv specific things)
    Series 2 SA/DT: Gen03 (S2 RID wasn't as big of a change as S1DT was from S1SA afaict)
    Series 2.5 SA/DT: Gen04

    Could go either way though. Gen04 could also be referring to the fact that S2.5 tivos first finished development in '04 (I think.)
