Quick Serial Cable building question

I've found several guides to make a Serial cable for a bash prompt on tivo but I am still a little confused.

I have a stereo miniplug, if I peel the cable I get 4 cables, like in my first attachment. Are the 2 copper-color cables the same? and do they go to ground? Just one or both?.

Do the other red and green cables correspond to the ones in the schematic of my second attachment?

The colors should correspond a quick check with a multimeter will confirm that. The copper colored wires are indeed the ground. You can use one or both of them its does'nt matter.
