ppp over serial issue

I have a s1 hdr31202 that i'm trying to setup to get data over serial. I followed the guide at www.tivohelp.com for setting up a PPP serial connection in XP.

The problem I'm having is that it never shows the tivo as even trying to connect to the computer and the tivo says it failed. I checked in hyperterminal to see if it was my cable and it returned this..

Since the 'User request' is at the end I know that it's setup right on tivo (,#211). I have double and triple checked my settings on XP and redid the .inf file and it simply never shows the tivo as even attemping to connect. Always stays at "no clients connected". Guest account is enabled and flow control is at none.

Any ideas? I'm stumped..

There's a very helpful thread over at tivocommunity about this stuff. I'll ask a few questions that I remember from when I was doing this stuff with my 212.
Do you have DHCP enabled for the serial->PPP connection? (NO is the correct answer.)
Do you have bash on serial enabled on the 312? (Again, looking for NO).
Do you have a serial connection for changing channels on a DTV receiver (NO)?
Have you tried a lower speed setting?

I have DHCP on my router, but not on my serial-ppp connection.
No bash on serial.
Running on regular cable, no DTV.
Tried all the way down to 2400baud.

So you're assigning an address for the PPP connection? Is it inside the DHCP range or outside?

I'm not assigning an an address at all. If the tivo could get a connection, the router should take care of assigning the IP. I leave the IP area blank.

It never gets to the point where it even tries to get an ip though.

That's the problem with PPP and DHCP. It doesn't work. You need to assign a range of two addresses to the connection that are outside the DHCP range. That's probably all you need to do for success.

Got everything working. Actually I just decided to get a cachecard and be done with it. I had a few sticks of 512mb pc133 laying around so I thought I might as well. It's a heck of a lot nicer than trying to do things over serial!
