    HR20 drive upgrade made easy

According to the talk on a DTV-friendly forum, DTV has opened up the eSATA on the back of the HR20. This is not a supported feature so don't call customer service.

At this time you can only use the internal OR the external drive not both. They have not qualified any external cabinets, RAIDs, etc... so your results may very.
If you try one let us all know however

Once you power up the HR20 with a new clean drive attached to the external port it will be detected, formated, and prepared for use. Also, you can NOT transfer shows from the internal drive or move the external between HR20s.

The other thing you should take from this is the software image must not be on the drive since a new drive can be prepped during boot. No more lose a drive, lose the box problem that TiVo has but also may be a bit tougher to install 3rd party stuff.

    Extrenal ESATA drive

Once a show has been recorded onto an external ESATA drive, is it possible to connect that drive to a computer and copy the show to the PC?

Not yet, but you can duplicate the drive.
