I just became another satisfied customer of Omikron's PROM service and figured I'd add yet another positive review to help anyone else who might be on the fence.
My S3 just came back yesterday and I have to say the workmanship is excellent. It looks like the socket was always there. Turnaround was very fast (one day) and he was very responsive my questions. All in all, a very valuable service and highly recommended.
Time to crack this puppy open and get hacking...
Alright everyone, here's you're notice!
I'm leaving this Thursday for a trip and will not return for several weeks. This means that any PM's, emails, and phone calls made during this time will NOT be returned.
If you need to order a PROM, you must place your order by this Wednesday or your payment will go into PayPal limbo until I return in late October.
If you want me to rework your TiVo, I must physically receive your unit by Tuesday or your TiVo will sit in the corner of my room until I return in late October.
Once I return, I'll be moving to a new system for fulfilling PROM orders and rework orders. The system will be as follows:
Each month will have two "PROM Days." These days will be Saturdays. If I receive your TiVo anytime the day before PROM Day, your TiVo WILL get completed on Saturday and will be shipped out Monday. If your TiVo arrives on PROM Day, I may get it done, I may not. If your TiVo arrives after PROM Day, it will sit, still sealed, untouched, until the next PROM Day. Orders for PROM chips will work the same way.
The reason for this change is simple. While I enjoy being involved with the community and helping people out, the "compensation" is quite poor for the amount of time it takes me to receive a TiVo, unpack it, set up the workspace, pretest the TiVo, rework the TiVo, retest the TiVo, repack it, and reship it. It gets much worse when you have no set schedule for providing the service, and shipments are completely sporadic. Rather than simply stop offering the service and leave people out in the cold, I've decided to streamline it. This way, people who still need the service may benefit from it, and I can manage my time and expectations without disappointing people when their TiVo takes an extra few days to process due to personal schedules.
Effective immediately I also have available a limited number of TTL/RS-232 converter cables for TiVo HD units. They are identical to the existing Series3 Serial Jacks but have a 4-pin header and additional TTL conversion circuitry. The price is set at $30 with no additional cost for installation if I am already working on your TiVo for something else. The price is more than you would pay than if you were hack together your own cable with a converter from eBay, but I've put some effort into making these cables and when installed internally they will make your serial jack look like it was installed at the factory. I guess I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to my hacks. ;-)
That is all for now!
Have a good trip Buddy, by the way, my Tivo is still working well thanks to your great workmanship. I think making a schedule is long overdue and I hope it gives you some Omikron time...
I might as well set the date for the next PROM date now.
If you don't get your TiVo into my hands by this Tuesday, the next PROM day is October 27th, 2007. Mark it!
thank you very much for your hard work, omikron! please do what you need to do to not let this "burn you out", as you provide a valuable service and you need to stay happy to keep providing it
Going to need the second piece of the puzzle.
Hi, I am planning on getting several of my boxes PROM modd'd, but after having done DTivos and the like, I will be wanting someone else to do the software (I really am a lousy hacker).
Does anyone have a suggestion of where to look for said service?
I apoligize if this is 'slightly' off thread, but the 'customers' herein are possibly facing/faced my very same question.
The problem with such a service is that generally TiVo hacks do require a fair bit of maintainance, especially between software updates. Anyone who sells a software hacking service for TiVo is doing you a great disservice because you will not be able to troubleshoot and resolve any issues you have when it breaks. Plus, many of the software hacks that are available on this forum cannot be used for resale because the license agreement expressly prohibits it.

If you aren't willing to put in the commitment to learn, then you might reconsider how much you really want to have a hacked TiVo.
We were all "lousy hackers" at one time or another. The key difference is screwed up and learned enough to become "not-so-lousy", and now we can reap the benefits. ;-)

just a question for you, I think I can handle the EPROM swap, but I don't have the time or equipment to figure out how to program the EPROM. How much would you charge to send me one preprogrammed for my Dual Tuner Tivo? thanks in advance.
Looks like he is charging $14 for the hacked prom and socket.

I got this chipping service, however I was never able to make the machine work. Even when I just laid instacake on it and made no modifications the machine would reboot when downloading updates, or such, even without any software mods just instacake... after about 6 months I have given up. I would be willing to sell the machine to someone else if they were interested it is a 2.5 with the modded chip by omicron... I purchased 2 dts, and am going without mods.... I will sell the unit with, or even cheaper without the hdd... (which could be the problem) make an offer..
The box was subbed for one day, then the sub was cancelled. (so it should be able to be subbed as new I would think.)
