ApgReaderThread died due to signal 11 - Random reboots

Ok, this is getting very old. As far as I can remember this all started with 3.1.0c. When I finally got the update I had to redo most of my hacks all the way from killinitrd. Long story short my DSR6000 has been randomly rebooting, and as far as I can tell it seems to be tied to my hacking. Also I recently hacked my parents DSR6000, and now theirs also is suffering. Until I hack their tivo the only upgrade was a larger hard drive. Their tivo was clean and trouble free all the way through 3.1.0c2. This hacking has been planned since before 3.1.0c released but I simply haven't had the time to sit down and do it.

Anyway back to the short story. Their hacking went very easily and seemed to be trouble free. So after everything was done I made a backup of theirs and restored it to my tivo. After a few minor fixes after the restore (error #51, blocking of modem test) my tivo was back up and running. It was cleaner and faster than ever before.

Now both of the tivos and randomly rebooting. I have been unable to find any commonality to the timing of the reboots. Sometimes it's recording one show, sometimes two, or none. Sometimes it's been sitting playing the live buffer without interaction. Sometimes I'm watching a recorded show.

The crash and reboot itself though is always the same, even on both tivos.
Here is an excerpt from my tverr log.

Even stranger is that both tivos often reboot at nearly the same time. This last one actually has the exact same timecode in the error log.

Here is what I've done in the way of hacks.

    telnet
    tivoftpd
    serial bash
    vserver
    tivowebplus
    mfs_ftp
    tivoapp: noscrable
    tivoapp: nowplaying sort
    tivoapp: disable yellow star promos
    tivoapp: 30 second skip
    tivoapp: enable backdoors

Only since version 3.1.0c have I used the tivoapp hacks. And only since then have these reboots happened. Before then I was using the same version of all the other hacks without trouble. I've even restored a backup of tivoapp on my tivo and only done the noscramble and sort hacks as I don't take advantage of the others, and still it reboots.

Anyone have any ideas? If you need any more info let me know and I'll post it.

    Update

For the first time the tivo has rebooted without any other entries in the error log. Two crashes back to back. Seems to me that this is a standalone problem and not related to something else. If anyone even has a direction I can try it would be appreciated as I have run out of ideas.

Well, I guess I'm back to the old ways

All this time trying different things, without any input from others, my ideas have still been limited. I have finally given up on the new ways and decided to try the old way of noscramble.o for myself. I remember reading somewhere that it didn't work with these resent tivo software versions. I'm not going to bother searching to try to find who said it didn't work because it works for me right now.

Hopefully this also fixes my reboot problems. I will let you all know in a few days. Maybe someone cares, maybe not, either way I'll post.

I had a similar reboot problem, I redid the hacks not bothering with the yellow star hack. No problems. No one else seems to have had a problem with the yellow star hack so it might just be a coincidence. I did the tivoap patches for backdoors, noscramble and 30 second skip.

    well, here is the news

It still reboots. I am running a clean tivoapp and using noscramble.o . Two DSR6000's one hacked a hacked tivo app and one without. One with noscramble.o one with out. and both are having the exact same problem.

oh, and btw now my left shift key isn't working too good.

    It's all just falling apart.

Oh well, maybe I can find a few s2 on ebay cheap.

    Sorry for the ranting.

    Hopefully the final update

I may have fixed it. Thursday I came across a post during an unrelated search that gave me one of those cartoon lightbulb type ideas. It was by superzap talking about xtreme 3.1 ( here ). I didn't read the whole thread, actually I didn't read much of it at all since I thought it was unrelated. Anyway, this quote got me thinking...

There is a bug in the tivo os v3.1.0 that shows up in the EventSwitcher. If you want to run any TCL scripts like noppv, mvchannels, tivotitle, etc., on a schedule, the v3.1.0 EventSwitcher will die in a couple of days and the TCL scripts won't run until you reboot.
    Schedule = Cron
Dead modem = Can't call out
    Fixsub31.tcl needs cron
running on a schedule in 3.1 causes problems with eventswitcher
    after eventswitcher dies must reboot

Anyway, I don't understand it very well either. And it doesn't line up perfectly with my problem. But since I have fixed my daily call over ethernet I no longer need fixsub and therefore no longer need cron. I have left cron running all this time thinking I might use it in the future. So I took cron out of the startup and rebooted.

Since thursday the tivo hasn't rebooted. But with my luck recently, it will reboot as soon as I click "submit reply".

If this is the solution I'm going to try going back to the new hacking methods.

Thankyou superzap for your unrelated post.

I love the idea of reviving a eight year old thread. I am now having this exact same problem with my DSR6000. There is no rhyme or reason to the reboots. Thinking it might be the drive, I swapped it out with a spare and started running a level 4 Spinrite on the original. Just a couple of hours before the Spinrite finished(with no errors), I got another of these reboots on the spare drive.

This unit has a full complement of hacks and has been running problem-free on 3.5d since August. The last time I had unexpained problems there was an lnb problem. Don't know if that could be the case again. Don't think it's the hacks. I've been using these for more than five years with no issues.

One other thing I should mention is that on the reboots the unit usually can't finish acquiring satellites before it times out, kind of like it was doing under 3.5c back in July after I lost locals although if you let it go to live tv everything is there.

Looks like this time it's DTV messing with the data stream. Affecting multiple models of Series 1 and Series 2 DTiVos.

It looks like it is happening to a bunch of folks. Looks to be guide data related.
