summerhome, this is exactly what happened to me and I followed the same guide (which has served me in good stead before.)

I can tell you what I did that ended up working, but can't promise that each and every thing was required.

    1. Remove the call to netconfig.tcl (I first had to FIND a copy of netconfig.tcl, as I was not using it before) from rc.sysinit.author
    2. Install the "backported USB drivers" (since my kernel log implicated a problem with the drivers)
    3. Copy dhclient from /sbin on the old partition to the new

    This did the trick.

summerhome you might also replace the original tivoapp to get to stock as possible. When I upgrade I always get everything copied over set up then reboot with the stock tivoapp. Let the unit boot up make sure things are working then go patching the tivoapp. My goal is to make sure it is working before I start messing with things.

stevel, Thank you, I did step 3, but not step 1 & 2 - I will try these as well.

RandC, good advice, and one that I have always done - start with a known good tivoapp and then modify. It only takes a little more time, but helps to narrow down problems - probably should have stated that I didn't follow the directions all the way to the end.

    Thanks for the help!

Step 3 is not necessary unless you need DHCP. I upgraded without it. Earlier in this thread, I posted a script which patches tivoapp. If you modify it carefully, you can make it patch the 6.4a tivoapp before you ever boot 6.4a, thereby giving access to the network settings menu, and eliminating the need for netconfig.tcl. If you do this, then the only remaining hurdle is the backport drivers.

seems like there were a lot of problems with 6.x releases, so i never upgraded. i now have the DST problem, and i vaguely remember hearing that there was going to be some guide data change that was incompatible with 3.x, so i'm somewhat interested in making the leap to 6.x.

what are people using these days to extract from 6.x? i've heard that tytool has problems with the newer releases, and though i havent checked recently, it seems like development on tytool had slowed considerably.

    thanks for any advice.
I'm using TySuiteJ most of the time now. It retrieves the ty files and converts them to .mpg on the fly.

Thanks to RandC for the patch locations. Has anyone come up with the Standby patch location to turn the standby feature back on ? Which is humerous as turns the unit "off"

The thanks go the higher pay grades for finding them in the first place. As I posted earlier I used a very crude method to find the new locations.

TivoWare created this a while back. It works on 6.3 but it would stop on 6.4 because of SW version check. I do not have time to look now I have to go, but as long as the .brf files are in the same location it should work on 6.4. Just need to add 6.4 to pass the SW check. Something I could look at later tonight.

the script is easily fixed to work with 6.4a. Just find the lines like this : if { [string range $SwVer 0 2] == "6.3" } { and change the "==" to ">=". the brf didn't change.

Like other people, I noticed a problem re-hacking my tivo for the first time in a long time, which was related to USB. It turns out the message in the log that a USB device is not claimed by any active driver is normal. I still get it after everything is working. But if a kernel panic appears shortly after that, the problem is still with USB drivers. For my HR10-250, I do the hacking manually using the 7.2.2-oth-K1 kernel, and my USB device is a Netgear FA120. The solution was just to replace /lib/modules/usbnet.o with the stock version from 6.3f. Networking and everything else seems to be working fine for me now. (You can get the old usbnet.o by mounting the alternate root partition as /mnt.)

Well since I have not had time to upgrade my units yet I can't check the .brf files to make sure that have not moved. Which they probably have not, but better to be safe.

    ----edit---
@*mn that is the second time tonight I did not read all posts before replying

Thanks jt1134 for verifying the .brf did not change. Too many hours I am really loopy apparently

Thanks Jt1134 updated the script and working great. Really wanted someone to tell me the location for the brf hadn't change before I blew up my Wife's baby.

Here's an actual, proper tcl superpatch, instead of just a patch script. Only works on 6.4a, and only tested on my own unit. It would be appreciated if the first few people other than myself to use it would report back with their results. Successfully tested on multiple units. Thanks.

Thanks to stevel and pdicamill, I also have the netgear FA120 and coping the original usbnet.o to the new partition was the key. I did get the serial port connected, and I don't know how you determined it was the usb driver - as RandC says, way above my paygrade (or at least a different field).

    Thanks again to all.
