Maximum mpeg "quality" possible for an S2?

Next to my THD I have an S2 which I use for playing/recording DVD, archival of shows and MRV with a Slingbox attached. Obviously the HD recordings on my THD will not transfer over so I am planning to use a PC as a go between.

My question is what would be the highest quality conversion specifications for the THD files that would play on the S2?

If at all possible I would like to preserve the 16:9 flag so the display will auto stretch.

a "best quality" recording is something like 720x480 ~8mb/s. you can easily drop the resolution and bitrate of your hd vids with ffmpeg. something like :
    Code:
    ffmpeg -i <showname> -acodec copy -vcodec mpeg2video -s 720x480 -b 8000k <showname.mpg>
should work for a s2. that'll just drop the resolution/bitrate and copy the audio stream. worksforme.

    Perfect!

What if the video has a DD audio track?

if you use -acodec copy, then it should be preserved.
