    Arrow Comments made in ADH....

Intek and TripleC over in Alt.dss.hack have been making some interesting remarks about the xtreme hack...

If Surgeon, Glitch or Boyce happen to read this I'd be interested in their comments and response... Or anyone else for that matter... What are the other two bad bugs?? and is there a good work around for the disappearing hack folder... Or at least a way to clear the logs periodically...

The comments are in the thread "DTV/TiVo hack?"

Depends on how reliable you want the hack to be...

There are at least 3 bad bugs in the 25Extreme software that will cause you
problems soon. I discovered 1 on my own (where the hack folder disappears
for no reason), and 2 others were shown to me on the condition that I did
    not expose them in public.

As far as the hack folder deleting itself, I see that it is starting to
    happen to some people...

This was Intek's post about the log file buildup problem. Not sure what the 3rd bug is they're referring to.

    > will chattr +i on the directory not fix that?

In this case it may make it worse...

The 25Extreme does not properly disable logging so the log files get bigger
and bigger... On a normal Tivo, these log files are packed up, uploaded,
then deleted during the daily phone call. With 25Extreme, they just keep
    getting bigger.

Tivo has a built in solution for this. Every time it boots up it checks the
var partition to see how much space is left. If it is too full for some
reason, it clears out the /tmp folder and checks again. If it is still too
full, it tries to recursively delete a bunch of folders to make more room.
If it is *still* too full, it just blows away the whole var partition and
re-creates it from scratch. But of course it does not re-create the /hack
folder because that is not part of the original install...

The solution is quite simple if you know what you are doing - just move the
hack folder to your active partition instead (usually 4 or 7) and leave it
there. Modify the appropriate files that expect the hack folder to be on
    /var and no more problem...

Is it just me, or does this not make any sense? It's not like this is commercial software or anything. Intek is a wizard at script writing and i give him full respect. But, he's making it sound like this is some kind of "inside tip". Most software developers usually like to correct bugs as glitched has expressed, especially those involved with linux.

Well, there is about to be a new release of Xtreme, since we don't know what the other 2 bugs are, how can we fix them? Moving hack is easy, but it's easier to disable logging. So what are the other 2 problems?

I understand why Intek doesn't want to point out what the bugs in the Free hack are... He has a vested interest in the "FREETIVO" that triple C and others are selling... It wouldn't pay for him to bolster a "competing product"

Boyce when you say that there is a new extreme coming will this be an upgrade or a full reload... It kinda makes it useless to have one that overwrites everything... Some of us are recording things.... and since from a dtivo we can't get grab the video yet!

Now I'm just getting into this and haven't even started poking around yet... But I will

This is CCC's message to 25Xtreme users:

"No I am going to wait for the real ECM to hit. It should be in the next few
months. Good luck to all the Extreme users! Remember that I warned you!

    Thanks
    Triple C
    http://www.CanadianCardCleaner.com
    http://www.CCCEscrow.com"

At $799 a unit, his and his associates' lack of motivation to help 25Xtreme users or authors is understandable. The evident glee is disappointing.

If all that will happen when the var sub directory goes is that the patches go kablooey and 25Xtreme has to be reapplied then this is not a calamity. Personally, even with 230 hours of space I can't look at a precariously patched pair of hard disks, from which the files can't be backed up, as secure storage. If the movies go away and I start over, so be it.

Isn't this all we're talking about here? Or is there risk of some more serious damage?

It's been probably close to a year or longer since I've visited ADH. In it's hay day it was a cool place, but somewhere along the road it got f-ed up real bad. It got to the point that I couldn't even find any good info for all the ads. I see Intek's motivation for saying that now. I guss it's all about the $ now. Is this hack totally their own original hack or just a tuned verion of 25extreme? I'm sure if Tivo is as worried about hacking as Dave, they could easily purchase one of those units and take them out as well (if they can or want to).

considering they didn't release til well after:
    1) the prom was hacked
    2) the kernel had it's initrd cleared

    and somewhat after:
    3) surgeon put together an image that could build a working 2.5

It is hard to believe that they did it ALL on their own, though they could have done the image all by themselves, they released it while saying that the extreme image was flawed, meaning that they had at least LOOKED at the extreme image.

Okay, rumor control, these are the facts as I know them:

    1. 25Xtreme is a quick way to get a few things done on your DTivo.
    2. In the event that the hack directory is removed, the only thing you lose is a few files. All of this can be replaced.
    3. I don't forsee Tivo sending anything down the stream that will damage the unit. DirecTV got in trouble for that with Black Sunday.
    4. There is research being done to prvent unwanted updates, but as you should all know, nothing happens overnight.
    5. As for the new image, yes, I am sorry to say it is a complete rewrite. If you don't want to use it fine, most of the updates will be available for installation separately.
    6. The new image will take into account some of these reported "BUGS" and other convenience fixes.

The simple fact is CCC is a scumbag thief. I have never looked at 2.5Extreme, but I can imagine the kinds of things he would call "fatal" errors.
    1) Sat updates aren't disabled.
    2) Log files can grow.
    3) ???

I suspect 3 has something to do with partition layout, or
MFS data. Both of these would only matter if you take
another natural software update in the future, or they
send you an update via the dish. Of course, number 1
fixes one of these potential problems.

2.5Extreme is just an easy way to get into the 2.5 unit.
I don't consider it a full hack yet and I don't think anyone
should. It isn't designed to be an allpowerful solution,
so far. I think it will rapidly evolve into that out of spite
towards the worthless scumbags like CCC for reaming
people by selling the collected works of people in this
    group.

    Ok. Nuff of my rant.

In the thread I started called "Did this guy rip you all off?",
There is a guy offering an image of one of CCC's units...

Glitched or Boyce or Bubba need to download it...

    See what he is doing...

this is what I have been doing- same as CCC is doing.

    in rc.sysinit

    rm -rf /var/log
    mkdir /var/log

was posted on here or AVS a long time ago. Been running it since 2.0

is this the only directory logs are found?

If you can get me the image. I'll take a look and see what if anything is going on. To my knowledge the only way to completely stop the updates is to disable the code in myworld or the 5505 that actually downloads the stuff from the sat or somehow prevent it from tunning to that channel.

Not something I have the time to do unless it becomes more of an issue. Currently trying to help Bubbaj out with his latest project.

It might take a couple of days to get an answer. It's a big hard drive.

Since this will only work during a reboot, would it be wise to make a slow loop to do this, say once a day?
