    bash kinda goes away

after a while, when I call up terminal, the bash prompt doesn't show up. Instead, I have another prompt:

When I hit return, I get another:

It looks like some editor. I keep pounding on the keyboard flooding a lot of control characters and over running eof marker.

Once I bludgeon my way out of this mode, I have Bash back.

Anyone else experiencing this problem? I leave bash alone in the /etc/rc.d directory, I'm concerned that it might somehow be in edit mode on rc.sysinit.

Hmm... not even that many views.

Even a clue on the proper key sequence to get out of whatever this mode is to get back to bash would be appreciated....

    Try ctrl-d

It's probably because you're typing in some command that is not complete or you have a back slash at the end of the line. Also check your .bashrc file for errors.
