Fixup works by faking phone calls. The Direct Tivo units don't need the guide data, so they can take advantage of it. The SA's need the phone to access the guide data, so if you run fixup, and plug in a phone, your basically calling Tivo and telling them that you're stealing there service. If you want to proceed to use your tivo with no guide data & without nag screens, then you can continue to look into the hack. If you're planning on getting guide data and not paying a monthly fee, your going to have to run a lot more complicated hack than fixup, and people may not be eager to tell you how to do it.
I think that users here are not in favor of stealing the tivo service.

The SA's used to be sold with the intention of using them with or without service. Well, without service means nag-screens. I may be able to help you get rid of the nag screens just by using the remote control and backdoors, if you like.

Here is a link to backdoor information

See the thread above regarding backdoors. You will need to activate backdoors, enable "debug mode" & change the date on the tivo to 1 or 2 years ago.

You can only do this while you are a subscriber(before you end up with nag screens). So if your grace period ends tomorrow, and your tivo hasn't shut you out, but has made a sucessfull call withing a few days, you have time. Unplug the phone, and start reading. You have 30 days after the last successfull phone call before it goes into boat anchor mode, and you end up with nag screens.

Read otto's thread and figure out how to do the steps that i mentioned above. If you have problems, report back. The most complicated part is setting the time. I'll look into it more and report back. You need to offset it something like 8 to 11 hours. and have to first enter the year, then the month, then the day, hour, minute, second, tenth of second? something like that....

What it does is trick the tivo into not realizing that it's been 30 days since a successfull call. If the Tivo thinks that it is 2000, and the last sucessfull call was in 2002, then it won't shut itself down.

P.S. One drawback is that dates will be a little off. Today is Tuesday 2/26. Your tivo may end up reporting something like Tue 2/28. Just pay attention to the approx date, and the DAY of the week. You will realize that the Friends episode that was recorded on 2/23 was actually last Thursday(2/21)...When you go to watch it.

I originally tried alligning with leap years, but it didn't work. Something in rcsysinit, resets the tivo to something like 1998, if you go back to far.

Not really a stupid question. "Browse by name" is where "Search by Title" is, but in version 1.3. The link was originally developed during the software versioin 1.3. The show search feature was renamed to "Search by Title" in 2.0 & remains the same for 2.5.
In otherwords: "Browse by name" = "Search by title".

Herrdude, answer this question for me, and I'll tell you how to set the clock, when I come back here during my lunch break later today.

? Assuming that it is Noon in New York City, NY right now, what time is it at your house?

I needed a reference to how far you would have to set your clock forward.

O.K. All of this assumes that you are not currently in "Boat Anchor Mode". Sorry, but I confused you for Dynamite. If you are in boat anchor mode, you will have to sub for a month, to get functionality back (& to access "Search for title" & Backdoors")

First, go to search for title and enter the backdoor code. If you have version 2.5 then it is:

B D 2 5(spaces between each entery), then hit thumbs up.
You will get a message stating "Backdoors enabled"

Then go to Systems Information. At the very top, it should say "Backdoors Enabled" Hit C-C-E-E-2(C=clear/E=enter). Go out of systems info and back in. The top line now should read "Special mode Debug" followed by the second line of "Backdoors enabled".

Now go to search by title and hit E-E-Tivo.

You will get a propt that says "Clock:"

Now you need to set the clock. I live in CA, so I need to set it to 8 hours in advance. If my math is correct, you would only need to add 5 hours. Also, you need to set it based on the day of the week, not the exact date. The closest Wed, in 2000 was on March first. So if you set the clock at noon(your time), you would enter:

20000301170000

Then hit E-E-Tivo again. Go to systems information and confirm that it is set right.

(The first four nubers are the Year, followed by the month, then day. The numbers that follow are the time(in military time). 17:00 and 00 seconds = 5PM(tivo time), which is 5 hours offset from your time. Durring summer months(spring to fall) you would only add 4 hours. You may need to reset the clock every 2-4 weeks, because it will slowly become inaccurate. The best thing is to set it 2 min fast, and set your recordings to record 2 or 3 minutes longer.

Lastly, go back to Systems information and do C-C-E-E-2 again, go out, back in and confirm that debug is turned off. It's just much safer to leave debug off. Try NOT! to unplug or reset the tivo, or you will lose backdoors and my have some clock setting issues.

Good luck. Let me know if you have any problems.

I edited my above post to finish the instructions.

One thing. I originally said to enter E-E-2 in Systems info. I edited that line for the correct entry of C-C-E-E-2.

Hopefully, I didn't leave anything out.

P.S. If you set the clock at night and the offset lands you into the next day, make sure you enter the correct date. Example: If you want to set it to march first, but you set the clock at 8 pm(your time) tonight, you would have to set the clock for 1Am, that means that you would have to enter March 2nd as the date.

I was playing with the backdoor codes and I found something interesting. Activate the backdoor mode as stated above. Then go to the "System Information" screen. Use the down button to reveal new system status information. There are now 20 status catagories with true-false listing at the end. You need to page past the copyright info to find it. Take a look, maybe useful to somebody..

It's an easter egg. Keep hitting the down button when you get to the last line, and you will hear a "Gong" sound. Do it about 10 to 20 times in a row, and it will reveal another message.

P.S. Backdoors aren't to be taken lightly. People have been known to mess up thier Tivos, or at least have to restore them from backup, from playing around with backdoors. I posted this info for herrdude and dynamite, because it was necessary to do the hack they wanted without them having to remove a hard drive(which could be equally risky). I wouldn't recomment using backdoors, unless you need to, or are willing to take the risk.

It will get rid of the one's that are most disruptive and annoying. You may still get a "No guide data" type of nag now and then. Tivo was nice enought to remove some of the nags in 2.5, but 2.0 was ruthless. It was almost impossible to put up with the Nags screens W/2.0.

Yes! Unplug the phone line for good. The second you plug it in, and leave it in over night, the unit will dial in, reset the clock and you'll be in Boat anchor mode if you don't have service. If the tivo doesn't make a successfull call for a month, it goes into boat anchor mode, but If it makes a sucessfull call and finds out that you canceled service, it will imediately go into boat anchor mode.

P.S. If you can dig up enough scratch, pay for the service. I think it's worth it. The only reason that I did this hack was because I had more than one unit, and used the guide data from my subd unit to program my non-subd one.
