Philips dsr 704 can't connect thru network

I have used Sleepers ISO method to hack my Philips dsr 704. I am connecting direct the computer to the unit via a crossover CAT5 cable and using a Netgear FA120 USB network adapter on the Tivo unit. Everything lights up, but I can not connect via Telnet or TyTools. The error I have been getting is Unable to Connect. Unfortunately I have a very basic knowledge of Networking, and of course am learning a lot surfing this site, but still have a long way to go.

ipconfig /all shows:

Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Broadcast: 192.168.1.255

I also used the default ax8817x.0 driver.

Any help would be appreciated. According to everything I have found thus far I believe these settings are all correct, but have not clue why I can't access this unit via telnet or TyTools. My Power and Link lights are on as they should be on my network adapters also.

If you're connecting your PC to the Tivo with a crossover cable, then you don't have a "default gateway" per se. Try specifying 192.168.1.111 as your default gateway on the Tivo, and set 192.168.1.110 as your default gateway on your PC.

Similar Questions

I am contemplating a direct connect to the Tivo! I have had lots of trouble getting a MA111 USB connector configured and working. Today I intend to return the MA111 and pick up a a wired USB 2.0 adapter. I have done some searching and I am confident I know how to configure it, but to be certain, I am going to go ahead and ask some questions first. Assuming, I get the drivers up and running for 2.0.

To switch to the ax8817x.o I will first want to go to the above files and rm all of them. I will then copy over the files for the ax8817x.o as sated here.

Is this necessary?

I am uncertain how to configure the port properly, but I have an idea.

route add default gw 192.168.1.1 netmask 0.0.0.0 metric 1
This is the current setup that is my Tivo IP first. Not sure why the bcast is what it is, I set that in as instructed doing monte. the gateway is my routers address on my network. Something somewhere is going to need to be changed. This is how I want to connect.

I have a laptop that I want to connect to the Tivo via built in NIC with a cat5 cable. The laptop has a wired port which I want to use with the tivo and separately has a built in wireless G NIC. Otherwise the wired NIC is currently unused and disabled. I am uncertain how to setup this direct connection properly.

If I am not mistaken, I must setup the wired NIC which is Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast and I renamed it Tivo. I believe I need to manually configure that NIC's TCP/IP information. I do this by selecting USE THE FOLLOWING IP ADDRESS

IP Address 192.168.1.1 (This address as I assign to my wired NIC, should be the same as the default gateway that is keyed into the Tivo via the author file. this is the same as my router IP address, so when I switch this to a wired connection to my router, it will seemlessly transition, without reconfiguring the Tivo files. I can temp change Router IP to be .0 to avoid conflicts)

Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 I assume no change needed here

Default Gateway 192.168.?.? Since this NIC doesn't access the internet, do I need to put anything here? Should it be a dummy addy. How do I determine the gateway for the wired port of this laptop? Do I assign this the address of my wireless IP address so it can access my network. Come to think of it, that could be important for when I want to telnet files, which comes off of my PC and not my laptop. When I use a direct connection, can I just send files from my Laptop, or can I access files off of my network, via wireless NIC and then through the direct connection?

Also, I can reconfigure my current router IP base address so it is 192.168.1.0 so it does not cause conflicts. This way I can Just change the router address when I switch the Tivo to connect to router. I just don't want to have to reconfigure the Tivo. I want to just allow it to connect to the router at a later date using the configuration I use now with the direct connection. Is this possible?

Can I use these numbers as stated?

This is where I am confused with all of the IP addresses for a direct connection. In the Tivo, on a regular setup you state the Tivo IP you want to use, not sure how to derive the bcast address, subnet mask always seems to be 255.255.255.0, and default gateway is usually the router address. Once I get this configured, I do not want to have to edit IP addresses in the Tivo itself. The reason I am mentioning this, is I intend to convert this direct connection, by running a cat 5 cable to my router, so it is constantly on the network. When you provide assistance as I know the friendly helpful folks here will, please be more specific than telling me IP addresses to use. While this is helpful, I want to understand the hows/whys of doing so. Where did those numbers come from? I appreciate all of your help getting this setup. I am heading to bestbuy now so I can get what I need.

Also, prior to me attempting the direct connection, I have the tivo wired to the router and will test all the setup with it connected to the router. Once I know that it works on the network for a "normal" install, I will then attempt the direct connection. That way I am not trying to attempt a direct connect when we haven't verified the USB connection to begin with.

Can anyone point me to a HOW TO to build a crossover cable. I have cat 5 cabling. And Crimpers and plugs to create my own cables. This just needs to be wired correctly if I am not mistaken.

Thanks in advance.

Tivo Direct Connection to PC via Crossover Cable

Well, I have it setup. Some things I learned on the way. It might be useful in case someone has similar problems in the future.

I first connected the USB200M hard wired to the router prior to attempting the direct connection. Some problems I ran into with the initial setup wired to the router was the 4 modules were not loading properly on bootup. I was beating my head over this. Because if I loaded the ax8817x Drivers Manually, then did my ifconfig statements, it worked fine, I was connected to the network. I had bash (can't stress making a serial cable enough to noobs! First thing I made when I registered in 2001.), so I was able to read the output. I kept seeing this error.

bash: exec: /lib/modules/usb/usbcore.o : cannot execute: No such file or directory
bash: exec: /lib/modules/usb/hcd.o: cannot execute: No such file or directory
bash: exec: /lib/modules/usb/ehci-hcd.o: cannot execute: No such file or directory
bash: exec: /lib/modules/usb/ax8817x.0: cannot execute: No such file or directory

I was going nuts, cause I kept going into /lib/modules and the files were there. After really looking, I noticed the /usb folder in that command line. I copied from a post somewhere the commands and didn't notice the folder. It blended in so nicely. Once I got that out, first boot was flawless.

About IP addresses:

Your router should always be the lowest in sequence. Not sure if this is an actual rule of thumb somewhere, but I tried some IP addys that were lower than the router. Why? I don't know, just to test I guess. My router for instance is 192.168.1.1 And rember the last digit is the one you will change to secure your network. For the router usually a single digit.

What I did: I bought a crossover cable at Circuit City for 8 bucks, didn't wanna mess with it.

I configured my tivo with an addy of 192.168.1.123
broadcast 192.168.1.255 netmask 255.255.255.0
route add default gw 192.168.1.2 netmask 0.0.0.0 metric 1

For my wired NIC on laptop, I set its IP address as 192.168.1.2 which is the path the tivo looks for. Subnet was the same. For the default gateway on the laptop, I put the tivo IP addy of 192.168.1.213

When I connected the crossover cable it recognized the setup immediately. Lights on USB200M were on. I could communicate fine with the Tivo via Internet Explorer and Tera Term. So now I was happy. Well I went to test my internet access. It was not working. Nor were my network drives. I could unplug the crossover cable and now the wireless network would work fine, internet access worked. I was confused on how to get them to work simultaneously. Finally, I thought maybe if I bridge them. I bridged the two LAN Connections, and it worked. Now I can access both simultaneously. Accomplishing my goal, to be able to connect directly to Tivo via my Laptop with a CAT5 Cable (crossover cable). Sorry I keep being repetitive. While I was searching, I put a lot of those key words into search and it was hard to find a lot of information on this. I also have it configured in a manner, that once I hook this up straight to the router in a few weeks, I just have to change my Router base addy to 192.168.1.2 and now reconfiguring the tivo. This was all important because of NFL! Its football Season. I am trying to start archiving my fav Team along with Inside the NFL and the coaches show each week to DVD. Now I have to get some more things installed. I hope this helps someone who is going through, what I have went through!!

Thanks Everyone!
